I need to know one thing...I have been contemplating whether or not to go to art school...Because of money issues. I can't seem to find a reputable source of information as to what artist in different fields make, mainly concept artists and industrial designers. I do NOT want to spend a lot of money if I will not get a job. I want to do art, and live comfortably. Is this possible? I have seriously been thinking about going into aeronautical engineering (another interest), because I am nervous about the stability of the field of art, but I can't imagince myself in a job not in the art field. Any real info would be HIGHLY appreciated, because I am basing a lot of my life's path within the next few months... |

Hi
In order for you to know your one thing from advice here, we would have to know one thing from you. Of course, you know what I'm gonna say, don't you...?
It is more than possible to make money doing this, and I mean serious money. Whether you're in 3D, 2D, concept, animation, BG, ID, anything. Most of the people I know had this same concern: they all want to make their livings, live comfortably, by making images and by living, to an extent, in the worlds and universes they create. Better than punching a clock for someone else who doesn't need the cash you'll make for them hm?
But how serious are you? Cuz if the first question you have is about money (and believe me, it belongs near the top, just not at the very top) then I would wonder about what you really want. This is going to be difficult. The sacrifices you'll have to make are huge, including a great deal of time spent alone and in struggles. But the rewards are something you can enjoy for the rest of your life, and one of those rewards can certainly be financial.
As for specific fields, well location and your demand are going to be responsible for some of that. An amazing designer in the middle of America probably isn't going to pull in the same $$ as a bad-ass in LA or Marin. BUT... in mid-USA... you don't need to make as much to be 'comfortable', yeah?
Feel free to email me with any more direct questions, and we can tailor what you're thinking of, help you clear your head about this and make some decisions. My advice: fuc-ing go for it, but work your tail off and be ready to fight.
Also, I am hoping you get some good responses from others around the world, not just the US, and from different fields. Good luck.

Thx for info, I am definitely serious about art, but I am also very serious about my future plans. I will email you tomorrow with some more direct questions. Thanks for taking the time to help. Money is not at the top of my list, but it will be a major concern in choosing a college, mainly because of their high costs. I just like to know all of the guns in the arsenal before I go shooting Thank you...
