umm..i think once you get life drawing down in general its a good start. i dont know if there is a difference between the two. maybe for animation it would be more gesture drawings rather than a full out render. |

I think the_monkey is right. But anyway before any life drawing session, regardless of your level, you should probably do a few gesture drawings to loosen up and warm up. Like 30 seconds poses, a minute, 2 mins... Right ? |

well.. i think i kinda know the difference. Animation would require nothing more than 5 mins? and illustration are the longer poses.. but what i meant was is there a specific way of linework involved for life drawing for animation. I get the impression at my school that illustration type gestures involve details and properly placed linework and animation type gestures seem to be more fluid and line work thats not really accurate.. Im not sure if this is right. Are both 'styles' cross-compatible? |

Im actually going to get into animation next year into Sheridan... Right now im taking a generel year... Currently i do about 3-6 hours of life drawing a day at Sheridan...
OK i have 2 room mates in animation one third year and the other first year. What animation teacher look for in life drawing is STRUCTURE, i cant stress that enough. Animation teachers need to know whats going on inside of the body. another thing that is important is Getting Movement , balance and weight.
If you dont have structure in your life drawing(illustrators dont because they are more worrried about getting tones , and weight and balance and actually getsome emotions and what not inthere)And it looks Exactly like that model to an animation teacher its just a drawing that looks anatomically correct. I would suggest putting down boxes. DONT START WITH DOING CONTOUR if you want to get into animation. In illustration when you draw a model or what your are taught to do most of the time is to draw the model from the outside in as oppose to animation you draw from the inside out of the model.
Another thing important in animation is LINE quality and line variety. Dont have your model drawn all overwith the sameboring continuous line... Usually you would have a darker line where there is tension or bones or even pain. A softerline where there is light bouncing on the skin or where there is fat. I mean fat is soft compared to bones. also keep in consideration what's closer to you will darker than what is further....
I hope this helped....

Only different in your mind. People make too much of trying to create differences to either feel they are so much more serious, or so they don't have to work as hard.
At the school I went to, we have an animation program taught by Warner Brothers that is part of the illustration program, and the program in total is more strict and adamant about figure drawing than any other part of the art department.
Gesture, construction, anatomy, then technique. At any stage of the drawing, you build on the first few seconds... so whether you stop at 30 seconds, 30 minutes, or 30 hours, an accomplished draftsman will know what you know, will see it, and will share the pain and anguish of trying to do so much so fast, or having to labor over the nuances that tell you of your shortcomings in anatomy. Also, he or she will understand what you did in the time you took.
Don't think a five minute drawing releases you from good honest drawing, and don't think a 30 minute drawing will save your ass if the first gesture sucks. No gilding a turd.
So, no difference until you adapt teh style of your medium, what your client or boss wants. But you have to have the same understanding. |
