It's almost impossible to help you if you don't tell us more about your computer setup and exactly which programs you have running when this happens, what you have done yourself to solve the problem etc. With the information you have provided so far it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Lemme guess.. You have a mobo with a VIA chipset?

I'm using R6 on a VIA board with no problems. How smoothly PS's tools work is almost entirely RAM based. Make sure you have your scratch disks set up correctly. PS like them to be on a different partition than that which the application was installed (ideally it wants them on a completely different drive). Also make sure your pagefile is set up properly (its ram+12 FYI). Someone already mentioned that you failed to post your puters specs, for all I know you may just need more RAM or just faster stuff in general.
anyway good luck,

you didn't say if you were on a Mac or not, but if you are and just reinstalled the app. you might want to check if you updated the altivec extension/plug in stuff. you have to do it manually-replacing a couple of files in the photoshop folder with ones on the disc-check the Read Me's. Also as suggested, check your RAM allotment and scratch disk choices. the scratch disk set up also applies to PC's
Oh, if you are on a Mac and just copied over your system folder from your old machine, toss your old Pho. preferences too. hope i could help, Don |

It could be a swap space problem where Photoshop defaulted back to not having the swap space mapped to a particular drive. |

Hi all,
I'm using Photoshop 5.5, and even since reinstalling it on my new computer I've had an extremely frustrating problem. Whenever I have a selection on and then switch to the paintbrush tool, my system invariably locks up. Sometimes it happens immediately after choosing the paintbrush, and sometimes after two or three strokes, but it always happens.
I've already reinstalled it once, with no luck. Anyone run into this before, or know what might be causing it? |
