It was fun! I went to Tyler school of arts of Temple university.
Just to show off my portfolio, i thought "they'll be blown away so bad that they'll have to be scratching their asses off the wall for a week".
Then i went in a room with some old lady with big glasses. She glanced on my 1337 art and said something about if i wanted to be an artist then i had to have broad experience.. and thats why i have to go to their school for 4 years and pay 16k a year (which i dont have anyway EHE). And no computer art there whatsoever :(
So i took my stuff from trashcan where she most hastly threw it just a second before, and went home thinking where to go. Hmm, no computer 3d/2d schools anywhere near me. Should i look for a job in a company for starters? Do what i can and learn on the way like many people i hear do nowdays. Kinda like faustgfx... ehh wait, he plays games on his job all the time hehe.
Umm i guess i wanna know what you peoples suggest me to do, and if you give good advice, i trade off with vodka!

get an internship, it may turn into a job...that's what happened for me, at least untill they went out of buisness
It deals a lot with luck, being at the right place at the right time. |

Yeah, if you want a job, look for a job. Meet people, talk to people, do what you can. There's a lot of bullshit involved with college but think carefully... because what it's really about for the students is making new buddies and having a good time. If you can wrangle yourself some financial aid then that could be worth it.
On the other hand, talking about the actual education, well the more you start to buy into that the less of an individual you become. That could be good if you want to get rid of all your individuality and fit successfully into society. But it's bad for art and creativity. |

Ya thats my feeling about college, too, but i gotta progress and learn somehow!
I think getting a job would be perfect for me to learn from other peoples and work at the same time.
But who could i talk to? This message board is actially the only thing where i can 'see' people that are digital artists.. I dont live in cali or some computer city like that so nobody in the whole state of NJ, it seems, is interested in computers at all! |

I recently got my reality check about college and I didn't even have to go to one! The school counselor helped quite nicely to dash my dreams into little pieces Oh well fuck 'em. Just keep breathing and drawing guys.

I thinks that it's a good idea for artists to get their experiences broadened with a classical education. Contrary to travis's comments, you don't lose your individuality and it's not bad for creativity and art. It has increased my confidence and creativity immensly.
Don't let the art department yahoos get you down. They're a bunch of art-endowed-angst-artists who couldn't successfully fit into society. I was a history major with an inglish minor but I was always in the art department using their resources to improve my art. I got an art job right out of college because I knew more than the art school students I was competing against. They could draw but then so could I. The difference was that I could write better, think faster, and draw anything that I was asked to draw without asking when, where, or what it was. |

eureka: its interesting to hear opinions from people who went to college (especially not for art as a major, but for inglish as one
Also it doesnt always mean that if you go to college, you'll know how WW2 soldier's ammo box looked like. You just need to read books about WW2 or have relatives who fought in WW2 (which in my country of cold winters there are man of those) umm wait.. im getting off track here
faustgfx: you lucky im not lucky
And i think the reason she/he spelled it "inglish" is because it was only a minor.. to spell it right you need to take it as a major hehe
travis: my councelor is kinda like that, except her son is a cartoon artist (ahck! i hate toons) but she sends her son to Tyler School of Art which is all regular art, nothing computer related.
well... people start giving advice how to find a job, maybe how to build up a portfolio and where to show it? |

eureka, that's basically what I was trying to say. that it's really up to you to do what you can for yourself (which is kind of stupid considering you're paying them) but that's just how it works. so yeah, there are some great things you can take from any higher education experience, and I would think for most people it's the only way to go.
also, advice on guidance counselors - they are fucking whack. I avoided mine too much to ever give you a first hand example but I know many absolutely brilliant people they've told the wrong thing to. My sister just got into a selective art department and she's a good artist and I know she'll become better, but her high school portofolio is just average, nice drawing skills. Nothing astounding. She was freaking out because everyone seemed to have awesome stuff at a portfolio day and all that... and one of her friends (a really awesome artist) was so discouraged that she's not going go college. So be careful guys, colleges are often times big dopey money pits, full of brilliant resources if you'll take advantage of them, but you've got to be aware of the bullshit before it hits so it doesn't trash your ego and mess up your life. |
