http://www.corel.com

they are the ones who own it now. I think it was formerly owned by metacreations, and someone else before them.

Buy a Wacom Graphire and you get the lite Painter version (Painter Classic) for free! But yes, seriously.

I believe his most recent digital work if not all, was done in Painter 6. Do a search for him here under the handles "Seeg" and "DonSeeg" and you'll get a lot more Painter info. I have Classic and 5 and the interfaces are somewhat clunky so I don't use them much. Apparently 6 is a complete rewrite of the program and is much more user friendly. I ordered it yesterday...

Hey I *LOVE* Painter, but only Painter 5.03-5.5. Painter 6 mucked with the brushes in such a way that I noticed it, and I didn't like the new brush feel...I use it so much that I picked that up. Although, Painter 6 has layers, so I have it anyway, but I only use 5.03 to draw\paint.

So yeah, a Wacom is a *must*...I drew with a mouse for years, and don't miss it...a Wacom 6x8 seems to be the closest to a piece of paper, that combined with Painter 5.03 is an awesome combo. Painter 5.5 is good too...by the way I think Painter blows the doors off Photoshop for painting\drawing, since Photoshop can't keep up as well with fast strokes, and the brushes aren't nearly as pleasing to me...Painter also lets you input your own drawing pressure calibration, so the strokes fit your drawing style..and the 'simple water' tool is second to none for laying down initial color and bleeding colors together.

Nuk: Is that your only complaint about Painter 6 over earlier 5 versions? (The new brush feel)

Hi there..

yeah that is my biggest complaint..I still want an eraser hotkey ability, and I don't like all those menus that collapse, but don't totally disappear. Still, the brushes are a big problem to me, since I had grown to like the 5.03 brushes a lot...actually to be specific, the brush strokes in painter 6 seem more like Photoshop, the start of the stroke is very round, and not tapered like in Painter 5. I love how Painter 5 will start with a small line with a soft touch, then expand and taper off again...Painter 6 seems to have lost this...and since I use Painter constantly, I noticed it and it affected my line quality.

Have you loaded the Painter 5 brushes in Painter6?
Do they have the same feel when loaded in Painter 5.
Perhaps there is a few settings that need to be adjusted.
I have Painter going back to version 4 on my computer. I haven't noticed a lot of difference in the feel. I keep the various versions on my computer mainly for helping people that have not upgraded with their problems.
Think the biggest change from version to version is that they have gotten the brushes to act more naturally. As computers have gotten faster and have more Ram and bigger Hard drives how. The Painter developers have used this to make the brushes in Painter more responsive and natural acting. I think you will like the next version from what I am hearing there are some neat things coming.
I am looking forward to the next verison for sure.

yep brushes are different in 5.x and 6.x
long ago i've loaded brushes from old version to 6. Everything still seems ok. Most of my paintings done with it. So i didn't see the trouble why you can't use them.

NukleoN -

Have you tried the scratchboard pen/brush for the tapered effects (ver. 6)? Tweak the settings on this brush and create your own variants. This is a very good brush worth exploring - it will do what you are describing. Me likes; especially with the opacity turned down so you get some nice layering - some might say spooge-like.

I also try and use the other new "computed" brushes a lot now (I think that's what they're called) because they are noticably faster than the previous version's brushes -- at least for me.

Also, you should be able to tweak the brush settings to get the tapered (pressure) effect with other brushes. I have done it myself - 'cause it's a lot more like what I'm used to with a real brush.

On the eraser hotkey - have you tried locking the eraser in one of the palette drawer positions? That's the closest I've gotten. I've got a couple of the positions locked myself. For those of you who haven't done this - to lock the eraser in position 1, for example, get the eraser to appear in the first window of the "drawer" - click-hold on that picture of the eraser and hold your button down until a little green light comes on below the picture of the eraser -- now that position and tool are locked in place. You'll always have the eraser tool.

Painter can be one complicated quirky mother, that's for sure.

Dang, I'm supposed to be catchin' up on some work... not browsing the Forum! g'night!
