Hello everybody,
I don't know if my post is out of the channel subject or not, but I just took the risk, in the hope that I could get a few pointer from the expert and gurus out here.
Well, I am a cartoonist by hobby, and draw freehand cartoons, which I scan and the color suing photoshop. A cartoon is attached below. Could somebody plz tell me if it can be painted in 3D using photoshop? and how would the result be? Other comments are always welcome. It would be nice, it somebody would be kind enough to paint this cartoon so i can see how it can look at the end. Thanx!

What expactly do you mean when you say "3d"? Do you mean that you want to model the scenes in a 3D program and then render them, or do you just want to add shading to your 2D images?
The first approach is pretty involved. You'll need a 3D program and lots of time to learn how to use it.
The second approach is pretty simple; it's just a matter of painting shadow wherever it's appropriate, and maybe some highlights too. You can zoom in and do it carefully, or work on another layer and then erase away anything outside the lines. It's really just a matter of getting comfortable with painting in photoshop.

yes, I meant adding shading to my 2d drawing like the one demonstrated on the http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/gallery/howto/ page. Maybe it will give more depth to the drawing. Is it possible in this simple drawing to add light effects? |

tulal: You want to have this effect added automatically? Press a button and there it is? I'm afraid it doesn't work like that, you need to paint it in by hand, just as you would if you were coloring it by pencil. This sort of thing is where a graphics tablet of some type would make things a lot easier.

Hello Daz, I am from Lucknow, U.P. Are yourom India too?
Sumaleth, yes, I know it has to be painted by hand! lol, no I never thought it would have been all automatic! I know, I sound so dumb, but thats becuase, I never colored my drawings in that way. Just flat colors. So, I didn't have a clue how to start. Anyway, I have attached my first attempt with this message. Its a shaded pic of one of the characters i the above original posted cartoon. Please let me know where all I went wrong. Thanx again!

Welcome here tulal!
Did a quick comic shading to your picture.
I just took one lighter shaded color and a darker one of the part I wanted to shade and painted on the light/dark side. Very quick method, but makes the image somewhat better I think.
Heres a pic I did for the monkey thread which illustrates the method some more.
Hope that helps a bit. Good Luck! |
