i am considering painting a mural on one of the walls in my school. my teacher said it was fine with her. for what i'm thinking right now, im going to need a bunch of completely straight vertical lines(they're long). would it be cheating if i used some type of tool to help with this? i probably won't just because that would require getting extra stuff, but i'm kind of curious if this is considered cheating or not.

Nah, use whatever tools you have available. Like shardik said, painters tape works great, unless you're working with oil paints or something that doesn't dry very fast. Or get a yard stick. Or a piece of wood. Whatever you need to get the job done.

String, tacked at the top with a weight on the bottom will give you a vertical reference line,

Not really a tool in the physical application of paint etc, and don't see how any reference lines (taped or otherwise) can be cheating. Go hard and post us a pic of the completed work!

cool. i will definately take a picture when i'm done. althought i've painted about 4 times, and not on walls(not counting digitally) so it remains to be seen how good it is. I was going to post a sketch but i guess i will revise it. one of my friends said "thats really cool" and the other one said "what is that blob!"

this is a really quick sketchy mass of what i was thinking. i liked the pencil sketch a lot better. i think i need some shading or something for the letters, or more .. something.. i tossed in those lines in the background because it seemed like it needed one, so that's what i was talking about. i need to think of something more creative than that though. oh well, back to the drawing board.

I used to photocopy my sketches onto transparency film and use an overhead projector to do murals.

You gotta use the tools that get the job done.

Remember those Renaissance fresco painters woulda used projectors too, they just didn't have 'em.

cheating?

how the hell does one 'cheat' when doing art?

not possible.

(and ripping isn't cheating. that's theft. there's a difference.)

whatever get's the job done. who cares how. it's the end product that matters.
