As big as you can afford. 12x12 is very comfortable, and I bet the 12x18 is better. Well, I'll find out in a few days since it's been a while since I ordered it. |

Actually, I don't much like the huge tablets. I had the opportunity to pick between an A3 sized tablet, and an A5 sized one at work - and I didn't like to work on the huge one at all. It didn't fit on my desk, my arm started hurting after a while, and I'm more for small, precise movements with the pen than huge sweeping ones.
I guess it depends a little on how you work. I've always liked drawing on small papers, so I like a small tablet. I also like to be able to keep more than just the tablet on my desk =) It's just plain annoying to have to move your entire arm to get from the top left corner to the bottom right one. A matter of taste, though, I would say. |

I forgot to mention that I work on dual monitors. This means my actual work area is smaller then the actual tabletsize. I'd say around A4 size. But as Enayla said, it's obviously a matter of taste. All the Intuos tablets are good enough. |

I've got a 12x12 and sometimes it seems a little too big for what I want to do... maybe get a little smaller than that..
probably the best thing to make an imaginary square over your sketches to see what you need. My drawings are usually 60% the size of an 8.5 x 11 piece 'o paper, so it might of been a better idea for me to get a smaller one (but I got a deal on the tablet where I worked). A lot of artist usually say it's better to draw with the arm instead of the wrist sooooo a big pad is better in that aspect. |

I have a graphire and methinks the size is ok, sometimes it feels perfect but other times I wish it could be just a wee bit bigger.
You should check out ebay for good deal. |

Bigger is NOT better IMHO.
9x12 will give you a workout, but not be becessarily better control.
I'm using two monitors too and I've got a width of 3200 pixels across - works fine with my 6x8.
The Intuos tablets are so highres anyway, that they're more than sufficient for that task.
Save the money and get a second monitor or a hard-disk array - that's way more bang for the buck. Additionally - who's got a desk huge enough to accomodate a 9x12 comfortably? I'm running tight on deskspace already ...

I use a ArtZII 12x12 and an intuos 6x8 here at my studio.... I prefer the "sweep" of the 12x12, but I'm going to trade it in for an intuos 9x12. Some people like the little tablets, some like the larger. It's a matter of personal taste I guess.
You might want to try ebay to buy yours. You can get some awesome deals... |

9 x 12 at work. 6 x 8 at home. I prefer the 6 x 8 due to less acreage to cover both tablet-wise and desk top-wise... |
