What's the normal procedure for collection from a client that you only met via email and phone? How do you know they will pay? Do you ask for a check? and when, before or after you send them the work?

Also, how do you find your asking price?

Thanks, TEd

im no expert at this but you should probably collect some of the payment up front and definitly make sure that you have a couple of ways of contacting them (besides a po box) so that incase they don't pay up you can contact them to demand they do so...

A valuable resource that I use frequently is the "Pricing & Ethical Guidlelines" handbook published by the Graphic Artists Guild. It has answers to just about everything and you should be able to find this at any bookstore. It also has samples of contracts, invoices, etc. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking a third to half up front with the remainder paid when you deliver?

Anyway, check out their site...

Good luck!

What Waldo said...
That's what I do.
Final payment on delivery; 'specially with new clients.
Regular clients I sometimes give 30 days.
Doesn't always work, tho'
One regular client finally just paid me for a job I did last year - harumph!
I now have "way too much work" when they call. Lately I've been lucky enough to be telling the truth.
Oh yeah, G.A.G. is a great resource. Handbook is very worth it to have.

edit re. pixualize's post below.

Yes, I should have mentioned that. I have the 9th edition with the 10th due soon. If you can wait a week or two, that would probably be better. With the continued changes and advancements in everythingthere's bound to more pertinent and updated info...

The new edition of the Guidelines is slated for April 30th and can be found at Amazon.com here.

I've had it on order for a while now. The previous edition is out of print, I don't know if you can even get it from GAG anymore.
