I'm just wondering if there's a way of grouping the canvas with the other layers?
Because if I cut and paste something from the canvas, it creates a new layer and then I have to switch between the layers if I wanna erase something on the canvas and so on and so forth...
I have checked the manual but I doesn't say anything about it.
Is the only solution to create a new layer before I start painting, so that I never paint directly on the canvas?

That's it: you have to create a new layer, or else...paint on canvas, select all, cut, paste in a new layer, etc...
