The first few years of Red Dwarf were pure genius, equalled only by Black Adder.

However, the last few seasons of Red Dwarf
were amongst the most dire, banal tripe I've ever been subjected to. Removing Rimmer was without a doubt the surest way to ruin the show.

Yep Sure do love Red Drawf, I have to agree removing Rimmer and the letting Kachanski(sp?) into Red Dwarf totally runing the show
But the first 3 seasons are the best, no matter of a doubt

Hey! they brought Rimmer back in the later seasons. At least I think they did.

The only time I get to watch RD is during the 360 hour marathon that they have every time public broadcasting needs money.

Fantastic! I thought that it was only in the UK that people liked it. Glad to see it has a more global appeal. Mind you, I think BlackAdder (especially "BlackAdder Goes Forth") is still my fave comedy.

I wish they hadn't brought Kochanski back as a main character though. Great T & A, shame about the dialogue.

Bad things about the recent couple of Red Dwarf seasons:

1) Kochanski comes back. Not a great idea; could be okay if handled properly, but they didn't, they...

2) ...they made the show into a sex sitcom. Making jokes about Christine's <i> menstrual period</> for god's sake. Tacky, tasteless, very nearly sexist. Chloe Annette is hot as hell, but she's frankly not a great actor, and her comedic timing isn't very good either.

3) Removing Rimmer and replacing him in season 8 with a reconstructed Rimmer, a Rimmer that has not learned the lessons that the old Rimmer learned. The old Rimmer represented all our cruel, mean, petty urges. Slowly, that Rimmer learned to respect the other Red Dwarf members. Then they just threw that all way and traded him for the same Rimmer we've seen since the first season. A huge backward step that demolishes the character development we'd seen.

Still, there are some great moments in seasons 7 and 8; can't wait for the movie!
