Hey there everybody... I have been a lurker for a week or so, but today I just have to post :P [if you wanna see art just scroll down and ignore my speech]

Ok... I am a freshman right now at a really crappy college, it's not even an art school, so yeah I hate it and wanna transfer.

My choices for transfering: SCAD, Art institute of Chicago and RISD

SCAD - I have been doing a summer program and loved it, every comment about it would be great though.

Chicago - Apparently a very good reputation, I never visited, so if someone from here knows about the place just let me know

RISD - Alright just anything is cool. I visited and was quite impressed. I applied to all of these schools as a transfer, RISD is the first one to answer and they don't like me even though I rule at art [hehe, my ego is big]. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, I have a great portfolio, great recommendations, great GPA, so-so SAT scores. And they don't take me, oh well, their loss, not mine. It seems to me that they didn't have enough spots and just randomly kicked people off the list... [or it could be that my computer art so far is very stylized abstract designs]

Anyways, I am mainly interested about SCAD and Chicago now, but comments about RISD would be great though. I wanna know if the great reputation they have is justified.

Anyways, here's the art [did it when I was 15 doing the summer program in 99 at SCAD]:

Sorry, but it was too big for my scanner [hair slightly cut off], and yes that is a stippling version of me deformed

Have fun :P I hope to get some good digital art up sometime when I have the time to practice some with my wacom...

Check out Academy of Art College in San Franciso too. That *might* be where I go next year, I'll find out after a visit and some more mucking about...

chicagos school is more artsy fartsy and fine art driven than illustration driven. But it is in chicago..and if you want to get work then it will be easier to get work there than in the back woods of georgia.

I went to school at ringling which is similar to risd and savannah in that it is more commercially driven. Like these schools ringling is far from the jobs when you graduate. risd is at least close to new york. ringling is at least close to some of the best beaches in the world....very close....two minutes or so... both ringling and savannah have big mosquitos hahah

it depends on what you want....look at the student work..if you want to make stuff like that then go where your work fits best. look at instructor work too. if you see smeary paint with dog food and finger prints in it then I wouldnt pay them to teach me drawing or painting if ya know what I mean. you dont need a teacher to do that kind of thing.

your work looks illustrative ...art center is another good one if ya can afford it.

v1510nAry - he, thanks man, I just posted it in this thread so that people have something nice to look at in case they don't have anything to say about the colleges. Don't really need a crit on it since it got me a 15/15 at SCAD :P

Jason Manley - Thanks for the reply. I planned on going into Graphic Design, which I guess is somewhat related with illustrative work [actually I don't know the exact definitions of different art fields]...

I'm not really interested in artsy fartsy stuff and the weather there is too damn cold anyways :P So far it looks like SCAD will be my best choice then [and I still have friends there, so that's a plus]

Hmmm, ok, I'll be looking now at art center and see what they have to offer

Thanks for the replies!

Hey, Chicago's not that cold! It's at 35 degrees here today, never gets much below -5, and often gets up around 100 degress

The school here is pretty artsy fartsy as Jason said (you have to wear black and be stereotypically alternative). I wouldn't recommend it for a commercial artist, but if you want to be a fine artist and show in galleries and do commissions, I would highly recommend it. I just made another post saying something about networking. SAIC would help you network in the fine art world. Other schools would help you network better in other fields.

SAIC shares a building with one of the worlds best art museums, Chicago has nice galleries, a growing high tech industry, a great work ethic (I hear people on the west coast will hire you if you say you're from the midwest), and a large variety of weather. On the other hand you have a large variety of weather, you're in the midwest, and people expect you to work like a dog.

Of course you can take all I say with a grain of salt - I went to a small non-art college. You get out what you put in.

Right now, I'm a senior in HS. I didn't take any art classes prior to this year, so I worked my ass off to get a portfolio together. I'm pretty much going to be attending the Pratt Institute in the fall (got accepted) for the CGIM dpt (3d modeling/anim concentration).

I chose Pratt because they stress foundation immensely (sp?) and basically work you like a dog your first year. From what I've heard, SVA doesn't work you that hard and you only get to use the high-end computers your senior year (bleh!). CalArts doesn't have dorms I think, but it's also across the country from me (I live in NJ). In retrospect I should've applied to Ringling, but I sort of consider that a Disney school (ugh but the beaches!). SCAD seems to be more or less of an Art Institute type school, and they also didn't require a portfolio, so I question that.

I really think all of these schools are on somewhat of the same playing field. They probably all have decent technology, but when it comes to teachers, don't expect 24/7 attention when at your workstation.

We are the ones who have to go the extra mile. Self-motivation is HUGE from what I hear.
