heh, I think the key behind Anthony's fantastic effort is that hes doing it to benefit all of us artists free of charge. So if you're willing to do the same, by all means, buy the book. Otherwise, you're right, noones interested.

I have Creative Illustration but my scanner is so slow that it would take ages to scan that in (considering that it's about 2 times as large as Figure Drawing)........

This would be a great service to the community - but I think like IO_Error said... it's something you're doing to help everyone here and donations will be hard to come by; yeah, I know the Loomis book is expensive - so I know why you're asking.

But I've got the book and been thinking I might post it like Anthony, since most of us simply want the information from books like this... not "collect" a first edition for $450 in veryfine condition we want to seal up in plastic and never look at. It's really Loomis' masterpiece, so it's definitely worth it.

I'll go ahead and experiment with scans and pdf files. My schedule seems to always be pretty tight these days, but when I get it together I'll let you folks know here in the Forum - couple weeks or a month maybe.

Anthony, if you've got tips you've picked up from doing this let me know.

Q

P.S. yep, like bugscratch said, it's a bigger book than Figure Drawing...

Quaternius, that would be fantastic, if you were willing to do it.
Ant would have to share his godlike status then.

Quat: I think that would be great of you to do! The way I handle it is just like anything-I wait until I'm in a lull in my work on Wednesday(ie; mental block, or just sick of pulling points around in Lightwave) and do it. I picked 10-15 pages/week because I knew that way I could actually do it, and not really interupt my work to the extent that it prevented me from getting done what I need to get done. I scan at 100 I think(maybe 150?), and the only tip I have is that you be sure to have the scanner use its photo filter on any large, well shaded, images(to remove the checkered/banded look). Use Photoshop to adjust the levels(pull the right slider left past the big lump) and save out(scan as TGA btw). Use Iraview to reduce color depth to 16 colors and save as gif. Works like a charm.

Okay! Looks like I'll go ahead with this.
Nex - heh... too late.
rdgraffix - don't know about godlike status; but am always glad to help where I can... thanks.
Anthony - thanks for the tips; just what I need. I also may look at pdf files.

Like I said, It'll probably take a week or two for me to get set up, figure out how I want to break it down and schedule the regular time.

It's pretty amazing that such an all-time classic (and continuously popular) reference book remains out of print. I know at the Bud Plant website he mentions this too - that no one can figure out why these books have not been reprinted.

Esp. if the copyright has run out, I would expect at least Dover Press would print cheap copies. Anyone know the latest copyright extent -- didn't it get changed from 60 years to 90 years awhile ago through the efforts of Disney?

Lunatique, Waldo - do ya mean how much is "Creative Illustration" going for, current prices U.S.? On the used book websites it typically goes for $200 to $450 depending on condition and whether it's a first edition, etc. Occasionally you can find "fair" copies for around $150 and damaged copies for $100 to $150. Anything below $200 gets snapped up in days or hours. I order some books through Bud Plant books in Menlo Park, CA and they usually have 2 or 3 copies of this one - usually between $200 and $300. I have a "fair-to good" copy that I paid around $180 for.

BTW, another hard to find expensive used book is "Alla Prima" by Richard Schmid - typical price for that one is around $450
However, the fourth printing is just out and you can get it for $95... I think Spooge, Ron Lemen and Don Seegmiller would all agree it's a must have book at this price. The next book on my long list. http://www.RichardSchmid.com

later...

Yeah, I have Alla Prima. It is absolutely amazing. If you are serious about painting, you MUST own it. Richard Schmid is a GOD.
