Hey, I've been getting into marker rendering lately in school and was wondering what everyone uses. Right now I'm working with Prismacolor markers, black - cool grey 20%...and just wanted some insite to other brands that people have had good results with. Also is a set of (black, cool 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% greytones) a good starter set?

I just picked up some prismas too. Haven't got around to doing much with 'em. You'd think someone with as little a life as me would have a lot of time .

Copic markers are indeed excellent --but very difficult to find in the US. A lot of my Japanese friends use them quite a bit. If you're interested, try http://copicmarker.com -- I believe they sell individual markers there.

Hmmm...never heard of copic markers, looks worth a try though! I'll stick with my prisma's for now tho, being that I'm only doing storyboards and character sheets for school....and their pretty cheap.

I personally prefer Prismacolor. Cheaper markers in some cases may be better since you are not afraid to use them. Many students I noticed use Copic markers. The drawback is since they are so expensive, students are too careful using them and as a result, the sketches don't come out as "free" and "flowing".

I have tried a lot of markers and my favorite by far are Chartpaks. They are pretty cheap only have one nib, are non-refillable, blled a bit and stink like hell, but man they rock. They stay wet for a long time so no marker lines and good blending. Also if you wait for a color to dry and then go over it with the same color it darkens up in nice incremental values. This means you can almost do a whole drawing with just one marker and have a whole range of color value. Make sure you use proper paper like letraset though, and dont sniff the markers for too long or you wont be able to draw very well. heh

Funny I can't find any prisma color markers here in Australia but we have plenty of copic

but they all give the same effect dont they?

Freddio! Thanks for the pic! Now I remember why I never use Pantone markers. Pantone cool grays are way too "warm" compare to other brands. Copic and Prisma cool grays are much better!

Check out Feng's site. He just put up his "how I work" section and talks about his markers:
