Seeing as how it is called "Illustrator" is anyone using it for illustration? I've tried drawing human forms, but getting the lines right and having several hundred curves makes it real slow and difficult to use. Anyone doing it successfully?

Illustrator being a vector graphics program, it is the best when you need precise, scalable artwork. I like to draw a parallel between the 'camera-ready art' of the past and Illustrator. It's good for geometrics, it's good for patterns, it's good for precision drawings. Human figures will be harder, but to use the same metaphor, imagine using drafting pens and drawing templates to do the same thing.

If you want to paint, don't use Illustrator. Use Photoshop. But then, Photoshop isn't just for photos, is it?

The name thing seems confusing, but remember that these two software packages were named long before the computer had taken over in the design and art fields. You shouldn't base your tools use on the names, anyway.

I've used illustrator, coreldraw, xara, freehand, and flash to do the inking on a comic book, "cosmic soda pop". (chapters 3 and 4, i'm not sure if they've been posted yet, although the first two chapters have been posted in which i used painter(bitmap) to ink) www.cosmicsodapop.com.

personally i think that xara is the best illustrator-like vector drawing program out there. its ultra fast, but the interface takes some getting used to. its not like adobes.

bye, phil

i just checked the cosmicsodapop site and the cover page and splash page of chapter 1 were done with vectors (illustrator). We did those pages later on even after we were almost done with chapter 3. the cover page was done with calligraphic strokes, while the splash page uses a variety of lines to give the feeling of calligraphy. i di that to greatly reduce the vector file size. it doesn't realy matter now because they converted it to bitmap....

At work, we use Illustrator for a lot of our web graphics that are not completely text.. well, take a look at the menu on the left side.. http://www.golfcourses.com . they were done totally in Illustrator then ported into Photoshop. There are new graphics being developed which turned out really cool.. all shiny and stuff

I had to redraw a picture of a car in PS Illustrator. It sucked, but turned out well. Got 100 on it. I hate sunfires now. I had to paint it before I did it on the computer so 4 weeks of looking at that damn red sporty car... all the highlights and shadows..... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Okay I'm better now.
