I'm trying to learn how to use autocad, and I know it can be used for actual drawings and stuff too, but I have no idea how to use it. could anyone give me any hints about help sites or from personal experience with it? thanks!

I'm sure you know this, but autocad LT is a vector-based CAD program for engineering and architecture. To state the obvious, it won't do the type of things you see on this forum; although you can use it to set up some things as guides to paint over. I've used CAD programs for years, but not for general drawing and sketching - though you could possibly use a "freehand" polyline tool -- not sure what it's actually called in Autocad LT.

There are lots of tutorials on the web for this program, do a search in google.com under
autocad LT 2000 tutorials.

Hi there

this might not be the right forum for Autocad stuff, but maybe someone here can help you... who knows. I used Autocad five years ago when it was still a DOS program,
so my knowledge might be a little dated...

What exactly is it that you wish to achieve with the program? If you wish to draw/paint I would recommend Illustrator or Painter/Photoshop.... If you wish to draw precise technical/mechanical stuff or architectual drawings you would wish to stick to Autocad. But Autocad is not easily learned, so if you haven't got a good teacher you might wish to try something else.

I don't know any discussiongroups for Autocad, but you could do a netsearch with keywords such as "Autocad", "forum", "discussion" and so on.... Sorry, that I can't provide better, more usefull help.

I use AutoCAD daily. Every day at work that is!

I also use it for creating pattern/textures. I will import them into photoshop with the eps extension. When you bring it into Photoshop for coloring the eps file will direct you to which resolution you want. A very good thing when you want a good map for a 3d model.

here is an example of an edit from Photoshop using AutoCAD pattern.

thanks so far. I'm not trying to use autocad in anything related to my art yet. I need to learn it for a drafting class. But, a kid in the class below firgured out how to use it to make 3d characters and stuff...I'll do some more searching on the net and stuff and probably contact some people for help. thanks a bunch!

When doing 3d in AutoCAD, you must really learn how to use that pesky UCS icon.

Command is ucs and ucsicon. this tool will get you around your models and help control the location your working from. I have a CAD Degree.

kay, well thanks alot. I've finally talked to my teacher today and he'll hopefully have soem basics to teach me (I'm saying that loosely) anyways, once I figure out how to get started I'll probably email you with some questions. I really appreciate the help here. sorry if it seemed like a stupid question but ya...I'm kinda desperate. we're heading into the 4th week of the semester and he hasn't given us a lesson yet and since I'm more of a hands on, needs to be shown type of person, I'm WAY behind. (At least I'm not the only one)
I did try looing up some tutorials on the net too, but so far they haven't really been of any help. I'll keep working though. I'm sure I'll have some fun with this when I get the hang of it ^^
