it is definatly NOT better than photoshop. but, it's free and you can't beat that. it's cetainly put together well, but it is still in progrees and i dont think anybody could really claim that it was better. the only people who i've run across, that like GIMP better, are the ones who have never even tried photoshop. they get up on thier high horse and say that it's open source, so it has to be better. personally, im a big supporter of open source and am looking forward to the day that GIMP matures. the only reason i dual boot with windows is the fact that i need photoshop.
as far as the wacom. not sure. the 2.4.x kernel has much better support in general, but i haven't given it a try yet. i heard about some people getting a wacom to work pre-2.4 but the only way i see that happening is if they wrote the drivers themselves.
the best way to find out is to try though

I use the Gimp sometimes, with Linux as my main OS, but feel that it's still not as intuitive/smooth as Photoshop for the sort of painting you see around here (which is about the only thing I miss from Win). Maybe I'm just more used to PS. Anyway, I posted some links in this thread a while back to help someone else with Wacom/'nux. 'Cause it took me a while to hunt down resources on the web and finally get the Graphire working, but it does pretty nicely now. Took a lot of tinkering. Ask here (or e-mail) if ya got questions -- I'm no expert, but have a bit of experience withit.
[Edit: I've got 2.2.18 on redhat 7, it's got some USB support, yo]

Im going to switch from Windows to Linux system, and found Gimp on a net, and some people say that its even better then photoshop. If anybody ever had experience with that programm I would like to her from you,
And another thing. If anybody ever used Wavom under linux, I'd like to have some imformation about that too.
Thanks in advance.

Has anyone thought of making a really dedicated paint program for PC?
Photoshop does a decent job but with 6 theyve added more crap for nothing.
Ive not tried Painter yet.
But, it should be possible to code a paint program that does better then photoshop for painting+image manipulation without too much trouble.
The features I think are key are:
1. Layers (the most advanced feature of a paint program -- might even be possible to use multi frames+layers)
2. Zoom mode (it should be possible to make a better zoom+faster then photoshop with selectable zoom, and zoomin/out at key press + split screen mode)
3. Paint tools. -- Paintbrush, pencil, and airbrush. Again, it should be possible to do a better job then photoshop does with a more scalable+quick changing opacity system for tablet or mouse.
Well, if anyone at Adobe needs a brain then they should consult me. |

Damn man, you words contain the truth, and nothing but the very essence of it...PS 6 was a step in the wrong direction, the all new menu is stupid as hell, you have to click twice to change your brush and if u change them on the fly, it does not even remember it !...
just my 0.02 $...

Painter will do everything you asked for and 100X more. That's why they call Painter PAINTer and Photoshop PHOTOshop. |

I agree that most of the PS6 "improvements" were anything but, but the layer-group/coloring is a complete lifesaver for those of us working on web designs with 90+ layers =)
As far as the Gimp goes... it's pretty good. Very fast, relatively full featured. It's not photoshop, and anyone who says differently just hasn't worked with the latter long enough.
Photoshop is one of the rare programs in the world where, 99% of the time, when you go "I wish it did this"... it does. The Gimp isn't there yet.

yeah, 6.0 was a step in to the wrong direction, but nobody's exactly telling you to use it...
if i had teh choice i'd still use 3.05. stuck with 5.0.2 now.
