i got 5.5 how in the hell do u center a layer? say you got a square pic.. like 2x2 inches.. u try puttin a text layer in it.. but it'll show up wherever u clicked in the image with the type tool.. how do u get it smack in the middle?

Use the grid or guides.

If you link the layers you can align them.
Layer > Align Link

I normally, make a selection around the object you're centereing, press ctrl-x and then ctrl-v, that'll get it right smack in the middle.

It's even easier than that...If you got PS 5.5, you're in luck.

This works with ANY object on a layer. Make some guidelines, one in the horizontal center and one in the vertical. Make sure you've got 'snap to guidelines' on. Get the Move tool and just grab the layer. If the guide is near the middle of the layer, the layer will automatically snap its own center to the guide. This is truly cool. Use it in good health.
