you guys post work and it looks like paint in a traditional medium (oil?...i only assume cuz that's the word ive heard thrown around the most i don't have any first hand knowledge of what an oil painting is)...but in reality i know you're using a wacom tablet and whatever...so im just asking what's the best program to buy (the absolute best...don't worry if it's complicated or whatever or requires extensive knowledge of blah blah blah i can learn anything) for this...obviously im thinking of purchasing one and investing in a wacom tablet

There are no easy answers! I recommend Photoshop and Painter, working in tango, err, tandem. Photoshop is faster, easier, and Painter is more like traditional mediums, but slower and more complex(computers are so naughty and so complex, I could pinch them). I like using both, switching back and forth at will.

`What sort of people live about here?' asked Alice.
`In that direction,' the Cat said, waving its right paw round, `lives a Hatter: and in that direction,' waving the other paw, `lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad.'
`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad...' |

I think Metacreations made Painter, but Corel released it. am I right?
Well, I think most people would know what you mean if you just ask for Metacreations Painter. (6.1 is the latest version at the moment) |

Adobe Photoshop 6. Latest version.
Corel Painter 6.
Corel bought Painter from Metacreations, and released version 6, the latest.
Basically you should get Photoshop. It is a worldwide recognised industry standard. You should then get a Wacom tablet, and that also includes in the package Corel Painter Classic. Just about every Wacom tablet comes with this software! (check first though) Painter Classic is almost identical to Painter 6. You shouldnt worry about that though. So basically from there you can decide if you want to get Painter 6, after experiencing both photoshop and Painter Classic.
Hope you understood that. Ask for more help if you want.

Painter Classis is not even close to Painter 6. The two are not comparable. Painter 6 is a complete re-write of code. Completely new brushes etc. Painter classic is a stripped down painter 5. Painter 6 is much stronger at image creation than Photoshop. Photoshop is much stronger at image adjustment than painter. Hands down you can paint better pictures with Painter. |

Seeg, while on the subject of Painter, I'm curious to know how you've got Painter configured. Which menu's do you keep open during painting, and where do you place them. I've always been annoyed with Painter's over the top GUI. It very quickly ends up looking cluttered. Just wondering how you solved this.
