Ok, ppl, this one's gonna be great.

Vote for your all time Art Gods, from the beginning of time to today.

List only 10. No more, but less is ok. If possible, post links to show examples of their work, unless they are extremely easy to find on the web(for example, Michelangelo, Picasso, Rembrandt..etc)

I think most people will post just 2D artists, but if you want to post sculptors, 3D artists, or architects, feel free to do so.

If all goes well, maybe Dhabih can make a page of the ultimate Pantheon of Art Gods by averaging and compiling the results of this thread, where people can go and learn about inicredible artists they might have not heard of, and links to their work. What do you think, Dhabih?

Here is my Pantheon of art Gods:

(Not in any particular order. I provided links for all of them.)

John Singer Sargent http://www.sai.msu.su/cjackson/sargent/
John William Waterhouse http://www.jwwaterhouse.com/default.cfm?selectedpainting.year=1880
Richard Schmid http://www.richardschmid.com/index.html
Tom Browning http://www.tombrowning.com/
Gil Elvgren http://www.gilelvgren.com/
Michael Whelan http://www.glassonion.com/
Robh Ruppel http://www.tne.net.au/~matt/robhindex.htm
Gian Lorenzo Bernini http://www.kfki.hu/~arthp/html/b/bernini/gianlore/sculptur/1620/index.html

Antonio Gaudi http://www.op.net/~jmeltzer/gaudi.html
And the newest addition--Craig Mullins, the Spooge Demon.

There. My Pantheon.

I have all the usuals, like Michelangelo, Davinci, especially Rembrandt. Then there's people like Spooge, Fred, Vortx, or Rockwell, and a lot of contemporary illustrators.

But I hold M.C. Escher in a special place. I think it was his relationship with math. He had a philosophy that everything had math in it, and all of his pictures reflect this sort of harmony, especially the ones he did late in his life. I think he truly had a unique view of the world, and understood why we see things the way we do.
I share the same notion. I'm no big math guy though. But I think it's out there. Just look at conic sections and their quadratic formulae. Or that 2, the first and only even prime number, has the same outcome added to itself or squared. Shit like that prove that math exists.
Unlike crap like English, or Philosophy, or just about any other subject (including art), which only exists inside of themselves, math is above that. There's golden rectangles in seashells.

Ahhhhh! I love Zorn as well, and I ALMOST put him on the list, but since he is very similar to Sargent(even though he does have many unique qualities of his own), I decided to give other artists a chance to live in the pantheon. I have this expensive($100)monograph on Zorn imported from Sweden(can't understand a word of it), and it has EVERYTHING this guy's ever done. Just amazing. One thing that blows me away about Zorn is his watercolors. When I used to see them on the internet, I really thought they were oils! Imagine my surprise when I found out. . ..

I have too many to make a short list of 10. I have categories; old masters, impressionists, post-impressionists, contemporaries, illustrators, architects, graphic novel greats, and so-on. Here goes anyway...

I guess top ones for me, other than the ones on your list already would be N.C. Wyeth, Rembrandt, Gustave Caillebotte (impressionist), Aero Saarinen (architect), Calatrava (architect), David Curtis (contemp. U.K. artist)- another artist whose watercolors look like oils - he still teaches workshops in the U.K., Kevin MacPherson (contemp. U.S.A. artist)- buy his book.

I stop now.

This is a list of some of my all-time favorites, though I do not consider every one of them to be "art gods" per se. However, they all score full points for originality and ability to inspire.

H.R. Giger [original and disturbing]
Michael Whelan [breathtaking]
Phil Hale [can anyone find a website about him???]
Robh Ruppel [drool]
Brom [hit and miss but when he hits, boy...]
Richard Schmid [amazing technique]
Mike Mignola [of Hellboy fame]
Frank Frazetta [a classic]
Gustav Klimt [enigmatic, charming]

I think these artists' works share the common thread of being simple and striking. I like that.

quaternius--I tried to look for David Curtis, but only found really bad, blurry pictures of a few things. Got a good link for this guy?

Kevin Macpherson's brush style is very similar to Tom Browning. Check out the link I porvided and you'll see.

Painted Melody--I just read through an Andy Wyeth book where he commented on every piece.
It was fascinating to find out just how passionate his feelings were about certain pieces(especially the nude paintings. I loved his comment about how he'll never paint another nude after that one piece. In his words, "I blew my wad." Isn't that just awesome?). It also proved that all the art critics are just a bunch of fucking wankers that don't know anything.

I love Klimt too. He's in a class all his own. Him and Mucha are two of the best "drawing" guys that can also paint like demons.

Piter-- yeah, Whelan destroys most sci-fi/fantasy illustrators. Not necessarily that he is a better painter, but his imagination and dedication to convey the essence of the books he illustrates(he READS every book he paints for!)

I tried to look for Phil Hale for a long time, since I've always liked him(and Rick Berry), but man, I've given up too.

You are absolutely right about Brom. When he hits the mark, it's orgasmic.

Richard Schmid is a true fuckin' GOD. I will NEVER get over what a freakin' genius this man is with a brush and palette knife. Even the Spooge Demon is in awe of him.

I used to worship Mignola, and I still love his Hellboy. Fookin' rockin' sheit.

Man, these Gods of the art Pantheon. . ..

*sigh*
