What you're doing is totally great!

So since you're going for the gold, why not improve the image quality a bit?

WebGraphics Optimizer 4.2 does a great job at getting acceptable sizes on even large scale images. (you can pickup a trial version at hotfiles.com)

3 bit Gif setting gives great quality and clarity, at sizes comparable to the jpgs you've posted so far, for pages twice the size.

I'll do some example pics for you, if you're interested.
