I'm building a digital art showcase free to all who want a place to display their art on the net. I was curious to see what features, and or what you would like to see in a digital art site. Thanks for any responces.

I think it would be great to be able to post comments below pics ( a-la Elfwood). Also a bio type page for each artist.
Those are my two cents. Good luck on the project.

I have a bad news for U. something like website without webpage interface doesn't exist.

but back to topic: Make something like charts. The best picture of week, the worst, most visited, image with highest rating and so on. It is a little bit hard to do, but it make page more atraktive.

have a nice day and sorry for my english

moonlight-- what I mean is that the web interface should be transparent, i.e. not interfere with the information which is being presented (the art) -- almost all art sites I've seen have a ton of interface graphics and doodads that get in the way of the purpose of the site: to show art. Exceptions exist where the actual interface is a work of art, but usually artists are not web designers.

thanks a lot for all the advice, the current prototype has an autodetection for the flash plugin, the flash interface is extreamly fast and dosen't have any type of intro moive, the HTML version still loads extreamly quickly on the 33.6 modem I've tested it with, but we're doing all we can to make the images as small as possible. I like the idea of the most visited image, and most commonly DL'd image. Currently I'm writing some Javascript applets to get this working but progress is slow. The elfwood interface is rather complex, and while it may be a feature in the future, I don't really see how the non-profit project can afford the man hours required to script all of that pearl script. Thanks again for all the responces, and please if you can think of any more it would be very appreciated.
