I'll second the praise for the Canoscan 660u. Got one recently and am quite impressed with it.

i got a umax for $160CAN, about $100US, and it has served me pretty well. no technical problems at all, very high quality scans. only thing is its SCSI, so it locks up my system while scanning.

PC World magazine reviewed 12 scanners this month, and came up with the Epson Perfection 640U as their best buy. Cost 100 in the UK so I'm guessing it will be around the $100 mark over in the US.

I got one as a result of the review, and am very impressed with it.

Other models of note were... HP Scanjet 4300C and Microtek Scanmaker 4600

If you want to know more I am happy to scan the whole review (about 12 pages) and upload it for you to read.

Hugz Ampa.

I reccomend the AGFA Snapscan series. Fast, very very good and economically priced (got mine for $100).

I'd recomend a UMAX 1200u its usb runs around 120 us and has some of the best TWAIN drivers and scanning software I've ever seen, if you are willing to spend more check out the UMAX Magic Scan II, dumb name but its slide scanning capabilities are out of this world and it allows you to que up multiple scans at once so you can drop 20 slides on the bed and then go get some coffee instead of being chained to the desk waiting for each to scan and then select another part of the preview image to get the next slide or portion of the picture you're scanning
