How did you guys get to where you are today? What kind of schooling did you take, or did you just learn it on your own? I read the 'Member Occupation' list, wow. I'm really interested in this field of work, and would like to know how long it took you to get as good as you are today. Me, i'm 14, and it's not excactly 'easy' to get into a good quality art school, so if you recomend it, it'll be a while . |

In secondary school I did the science/math streamed course.
At home at the same time I did lots of little images for computer games that I wrote.
--
After school I tried to get into a music career. It didn't happen.
--
At uni I did Electrical Engineering.
At home at the same time I did images and logo's for the demoscene.
--
After uni I tried to get work as a coder for computer games. I also wrote about computer graphics for magazines.
At home at the same time i did artwork for another game, and started experimenting with 3D.
--
And then I got offered a 1 month job to help finish off some game artwork for electronic pokie machines. All those years of doing gfx with a mouse on the C64 and Amiga actually paid off.
And then at the end of that job I was offered a full position doing 3D animation for television commercials. And this is for a company that ended up being involved in The Matrix!
At home, for the 5 years that I worked there, I continued to do game art (for quake mods mainly), plus dabbled in illustrating work for web sites.
And then I was offered an even better job which is where I'm at now.
It's weird how things work out.

I think the point of this story is that you don't need special schooling, you just need to be dedicated, or at least find it really fun.
Having said that, I *wish* I had taken some art courses at uni. I'm sure it would have helped me today.
Row.
