heya, just wondering what everyone's preferred method of organizing reference images (photos, paintings, etc), whether there any useful tools, or what kinda schema, blah blah blah.
Currently I have 2 main folders, one for artists where all paintings go under, and another for subject matter. (all images in subfolders)... |

I have a reference folder under "My Documents" which has a sub-directory for 'images' where I usually divide the pictures into main categories such as 'Men, Women, Creatures, Scenes, Abstract...Other' Some of those categories gets broken down into even smaller sections. 'Men' might be broken down into 'Real, SciFi, Ancient, and Other' After so many months I burn the images to a cd for archiving for later reference if need be, or inspiration.
Gah I hope I got all of my thoughts in. Sorta rushing to type this

Does porn count as reference photos?
I have separate directories for all of my favorite artists, then a few big miscellaneous directories, like /sijun, /fantasy, /scifi, /boobies, etc. |

I have four bookshelves filled with books, thats one aspect.
On the computer I have a pretty elaborate (and evolving) set of directories;
art-3dimensional/
art-demo/ (demo scene)
art-digital/
art-games/ (images from games)
art-photo/
art-traditional/
Each of those folders is filled with folders for artists or subjects. Altogether it's a little over a gig.
It's actually not all for reference, although it does get used for that purpose quite a lot, I really just like to collect images that I like.
Row.

waylon: because you have nothing better to do with your time than drool over some jpeg's of something that's morally rather questionable?

I don't use reference images.
As far as my 'work'.. and organization? hahaha... if you only knew. I have no organization. The idea of me trying to organize my jumble called art... is laughable. |

Hah, LOL.
I have a refpics directory, and I use naming conventions, like tech_mech01.jpg, or tech_car05.jpg, or organic_human_malemuscles01.jpg.
I name things with 01, 02, 03 etc. because if you just do 1, 2, 3, when you get to 10 windows will put it in the wrong order.
I do the same thing as Sumaleth. If I see a cool image I save it. I also have a lot of photos from imagebank and places like that. Though my collection isn't half as large. |
