I posted this unfinished for a couple of reasons:
1. I've had a few people e-mail me and ask me how I go about making my pictures so I thought this "in progress" pic might be interesting to look at for some folks
2. My poor little hand is dead tired from making all those hairs and I'm eager to hear the comments on this piece.
I've been working on this image on and off for a few days now, it's been quite tedious. It's more or less another practice image since I got my Wacom (yay again!). I fear that if I drew this from life, I may not be here to show it today so yes - it is based off a photo, hehe.
Here is the smaller version of average quality.
Detail:
If you want the full-rez high quality version (which I would recommend checking out because it looks a whole lot better) then click this link here. It's about 500k or so.

Crits/Comments please

[edit: decided to throw in a detail image for those not wanting to open the large version]

Awesome job so far beth. I'd love to see the finished work since wolves have to be one of my favorite animals. The lip looks a little bit high IMHO.

Good job so far, very realistic, especially with the hair. Looking forward to the finished version.

I decided I would hit two birds (err, well three birds I guess ) with on stone here. I did a couple of images for that really nifty gasmask thread that I wouldn't mind getting crits on either =)
These are both WAY outside my normal style, they are highly experimental for me. I wanted to play around with a messy, not-so-perfected approach to painting and I also wanted to mess around with some dramatic lighting.
Man I love my new tablet. I stayed up all night making pictures, haven't gone to sleep yet Hehehe...

Thanks so much for the compliments everyone. You people are actually starting to make me feel like one of those... artists or something.
Right now I'm wondering how I should crop the composition whenever I'm finished - IF I should crop the composition that is. Anything suggestions?
Or any comments on my funky scary oogly masks? Hehehe... I'm afraid to ask

My gosh, you're insane. All those hairs. You must be able to crack wallnuts with your bare hands by now. Very nice image!

I might do a radial motion blur - his head completely in focus, and it blurring more and more as it goes out from his neck/back? Just a though.

Ah, looks good. You have far more patience than I do - I didn't draw individual hairs in my dog pic, even on the detailed areas.

Well, I still have a little more to do Anthony... I don't want to use any filters on this piece, just brushwork.
(although I did use a little gaussian blur for parts of the fur in the back)
sighs, anyways... I'll let this image start to float back to the bottom again :/

beth, I like your wolf (when I was a kid, they were my fav. animal) . . . do you have anything you're proud of from your pre-wacom days? Anything you've scanned or could get around to scanning?
I like how your stuff has emotion driving it, and you're not using cliche angles and cliche poses. Nice to see.

Hmmm.... my pre-wacom days... considering that was only about hmmm... 5 days ago, yup I've got plenty of stuff, hehe
Ummm... I guess I'm fond of the showdown image I did, that was all mouse work (and actually done from my head with zero photo ref!!). And the entire face of my self portrait I posted the other day was all mouse work, the hair/hat/coat was finished up with my tablet. On my webpage I have several traditional drawings posted up... speaking of which I need to update my site. I've got much more work than what is shown there...
Hmmm... just check out my website Star

Yeah, I mentioned at the beginning that I used a photo ref... I wish I didn't have to though...
I'm slowly trying to get away from that but I suck at drawing if I don't have something to look at... blah! :/

Hey, Jez. Cheer up. You DO already very good. I love your style. Even Spooge or Mike did start like that. A lot worse I guess You learn a lot (if not everything) through references.
....I guess I better get myself to some reference-drawings. |

about the wolf: the front lip is too high and not wrinkled enough, the muzzle is WAY too short, and the eye is a little wrong. for one thing, try making it slightly less bright a yellow, and a hair bigger. what's going on with the right ear? |

absinthe:
If you read in the beginning you'd see I'm not finished with it yet. I've heard the comment about the lip already, however something like that would be way too hard for me to fix at this point and I don't think it's that noticeable.
The muzzle looks short because there is some foreshortening involved here, I'm just not too good at achieving the effect. But I assure you that if you looked at the wolf from the side, his muzzle wouldn't look so short.
The hair around the eyes of a wolf is shorter and more coarse that the other hair on it's body. I feel that making the hair bigger there would look sort of odd. However, I do agree with the color of the eye... that's another part of the piece that isn't completely done yet.
Thanks for the comments
El Caseron:
Thank you! But I bet Spooge or Micke were well free of their photo ref habit by the time they were my age, hehe - 21. I spent too long not developing my skills... but I learn very fast, using it to my advantage. =)

i meant make the eye bigger, not the hair...i did see that this is a work in progress, which is why i pointed out things that could be changed before you're done. the fur looks great, by the way...definitely no problems with making fur look like fur! |

Doh. A hair bigger! I saw that and read "the hair bigger"... I feel silly now
Dives:
When I painted this I was hoping that when someone first opened it, they might possibily think it was a photo at first glance. Umm... thanks for you comment and your rows of funky eeek faces =)
