Uh, hi... I'm new here, just registered as a matter of fact, but I thought this might be a good place to post this question.
I've long wanted to make prints of my CG works (or the ones I'm happy with anyway,) but I have been unable to produce something I'm happy with.

So, the question is, what's the proper res for print material off digital media (scan, working, AND final print res), should I be working on RGB or CMYK (or does it matter), and what file format should I be exporting to the printer?

Any help would really be appreciated, thanks!

a good res for print is 300dpi at full size, and CMYK considering RGB is screen colors, CMYK is used by printers.

um. i wouldnt call myself an expert. but i would guess 300 DPI, CMYK.

and probally .bmp or .psd...or .tga <--i dont feel file format really matters, as long as its not compressed...well maybe a .png.

and print on good glossy paper. no crap paper.

what avout getting stuff done professionally?

Like my printer is rather dodgy

well It can produce nice prints @ 600 dpi with glossy film...

but only a4

Currently I work two jobs (for those who know me on this forum that's why my presents has been lacking these last few months) One is for a Photoprocessing and Print Lab where we have a 6ft inkjet printer. With that said and done:

300 dpi is good like everyone suggested. I don't know if this holds up true for other large format printers (we exclusively use Ilford Inkjets) but they way the printer works is that anything over 400 dpi, Ripstar (The program built for the printer that processes the image files) will automatically drop down to 400 dpi. From there the printer takes the processed file and simulates 1200 dpi.

Another thing you want to do is call up the place where you intend to get your art printed and see if they have a monitor calibration program. At work we have an calibrated image to all of our machines at work that customers can take home and use to adjust their monitors to match ours.

All of our equipment will only take RPG type prints even though the large format inkjet uses an eight head CMYK setup. Although this differs from place to place. Generally we haven't had any problems with going from CMYK to RGB so to be safe you could work in CMYK mode and then if the print place prefers you could convert it to RGB color.

For file format TIFF IBM formatted is the prefered format, PSD comes in second.

Ok I read your post a few more times after I got this far and now I'm wondering if you where refering to printing yourself or getting them printed at a print lab. ;D

.TIFF all the way baby. Not BMP since it takes too much time to read in and not PSD unless its fully flattened.

Make sure you have your monitor calibrated right. Nothing hurts as much as seeing your awesome creation coming out red where it should be blue and black all over...
