Here is something I did off and on yesterday and today. I tried to go for a night time feel. For some reason the pic is darker on the web than in photoshop. Oh well. This is my first time coloring a pro's pencil\inks. I understand what Liquid! means by Joe's weird lightsourcing.

By the way, thought I would add that I haven't seen the published version of this pic. I forgot to pick up Superman 165? I think it is. So, I'd be interested to know how close I came to the real version.

Very nice colors. Saw the exact same image colored a different way. That one blinded my eyes. Like how you interpreted it as a night scene.

Superman did. This issue takes place after Superman voted Batman off of the Justice League. Batman had a plan to disable the Justice League if any of the members abused their powers. Superman didn't like that cause he almost got killed.

lookin quite nifty there Chapel. You are definetely improving. One thing I think is letting it down tho, is everything is looking abit flat. If you concentrate more on your light and dark areas, and put some more contrast between them it will look much more solid. Do that with the technique you are using now and then pow, I think it'll be there

I'm posting this side by side just so everyone can see what I had to work from for the original linework.

I didn't go for real strong highlights in this pic just because I wanted the night time feel. So, I guess it ended up with a lack of contrast. Batman is supposed to hide in shadows and all.. I don't want him to be real shiney. But I appreciate the comments.. keep em coming.

Think there's just right enough contrast. Though.. I might want to point out that it could be to your benifit to make batman and/or superman a tad bit brighter. Or perhaps change the colors on the buildings to make them stand out a bit better. The first thing that catches my eye is the neon signs..... (or maybe its batmans face... tehy're so lcose together...hehe) But anyway.. good work. Keep that good stuff up.

HI!!!!!!

you know i was gonna reply to this, and since i have the issue sitting RIIIIGHT here. i get to comment woo! christmas issue of superman giving everyone presents. yes even batman... he gave flash tubessocks BWAHAHAHAHA ok on to your picture!

ok how close did you get to the real version lets see....

ok comparing both, the comic version has a less detailed colouring, in the real one they completely left out the yellow part of the symbol on batmans chest.

ok wait im doing this wrong... let me tell you what i think you did better, and thats ALOT. the signs, you did them awsome! the buildings, you did them better i like your variations better, in the real one they are all brown :P blech. i like how you coloured batman better, but whats with the old costume? his costume is black now... you colored him oldstyle... in the comic, hes black and grey, not blue and grey... you colours are brighter and more eye popping and fit the fact its a super man comic better than the actual colouring in the comic...

now, the bad.... i dont like how you coloured superman... too flat. not like batman... and his cape is pink hehe but i like how you did his skin, looks like hes really behind him... very cool.. but i think you need to define supermans mucles a bit more...

the difference, your sign "MOTEL" is green, in the book its pink, in the book the bats are gone in the sky. and as i said before, the colors in the building are different.

overall, I like YOURS better. GREAT JOB!

-Lisa

Haha.. I asked Rinaldo if I should do him black and grey and he said that DC would probably have me shot.. or something to that nature. I see what you mean about Superman. I think the blue is a little too babyish so I'll work on him tonight and define the muscles. Don't know if I'll change Batman. I'm an old school Bats fan.. back when he was the world's greatest detective.. not when he was the world's biggest hero with inner turmoil. I have to fix some other errors somebody pointed out. I can't seem to get down the "coloring between the lines".

By the way, this is a splash page.. not a cover. I was thinking the Arms store had something to do with the story. So, I chose orange and green to attract the viewers eye but still compliment Batman and Superman. Orange for blue.. green for red.

oh yeah i forgot!

"lois" hehe gave batman a magnifying glass i think superman was just saying that so yeah...

i think the colours you picked were better

Awesome work chapel!
This looks really pro-isch to me
Just one thing, the lineart, batmans mouth look a bit weird...it seems wrong anatomicly.
But hey I can be wrong, im not a pro so i could be really wrong.
Anyway the color work is just stunning.

Ok Darkmoon.. this one is for you.

By the way, I tried to fix Supes a little and added some darker tones to Bats. I also updated the original pic up top case you didn't notice.

Nice work Chap.. I think most people have said more than I can think of to say about this, I like the coloring and I prefer the one with the darker batman.

And as to what your icq said...

Keep up the good work

those are good quite professional looking!

and my personal favorite rendition of batman/batmans costume is Frank Millers from the dark knight returns...

And even if I could it'd all be grey, but your picture on my wall
it reminds me that it's not so bad

Very nice work Chapel, I like it heaps. I like how you posted the black and white images as it shows you had a think about the image. There are shadows that I originally thought were part of the line work but turned out to be your own intrepration.

Having said that, I'm a bit hesistant to go as far as to say that it is 'pro' looking. It is definately a step in the right direction. I guess the main thing is that it is just that one step shy of looking 'brilliant' (I've tried colouring and respect your talent as I know it is pretty hard to do). It just doesn't have that 'glowing' feel to it. Look at some of Liquids! colourings on Joe Mads site. I know people debate the relative merits of having everything 'liquid' texture looking but this feel for mine is the dividing line between those who are great and those is are brilliant with colouring.

Love Batmans head shadow you created.

Matt: I agree.. that is why I'm not pro. hehe I feel it is just a matter of time right now.. instead of straight out copying Liquid! or anyone else I feel I'm developing my own style, so the fact that it doesn't look like Liquid! or someone else is good to me. I've come a long way since September I think. I'll figure it out eventually.

i like batman as black and grey. It almost makes superman look stronger (color wise)If that is your color change on super or just my eyes i dont know. I love batman and superman. You did them beautifully
the only tyhing that kind of bothers me is batman's right foot. well i think thats his foot. It looks a tad bit too pointed and lengthy. thats my only problem with it

I don't know why but I've always liked the black and grey Bats myself as well, Brue...felt like it suited his dark nature a bit more.

Nice improvement though, Chapel. It's looking more like nighttime lighting. The only thing that reads kinda funny is Supe's right cheek (our left). The shadow looks like it should be raised ever so slightly to match his other cheekbone. It looked great when I first looked at the overall image but then I noticed this when looking closer so maybe I'm just reading into this too much, heh. Looking great man!

Hey Chapel
Great stuff! I have that issue with me as we speak and you're right on the button with the grey black Batman. It's funny but I'm taking up coloring on the side for fun. In fact, I have two guys from Image comics that work at Midway with me and they show me how to do stuff all the time. Check out my Dragonball pic and you'll see what I mean. Anyway, one of the guys (Tony Washington from Digital Broome) is trying to get me and another guy at work to put out a book together. Keep it up, it's looking really good.

Here's a pic I drew and colored from a previous post. It's incomplete (doesn't have cool colors for reflected light in shadows yet) but I thought you might like it.

By the way, you have a cool site. I found the links there today to be quite helpful. Thanks.

BTW Even though my picture doesn't show it, I would suggest some rim lighting or some warm color towards the bottom sides of Bats body. It really helps to seperate him from the background in dark places. Supes doesn't need it because he stands out so much.
