As the title states.. MrHiemey can not be moved by punk music. In his words "It all sounds the same". Now I listen to techno, j-pop, metal, indy, etc...and PUNK. I grew up listening to punk.. so naturally I want to share the love... But instead David listens to this crap band... Archers of loaf, whose songs generally sound the same and are all about hateing women.

I have tried to get him into punk music by giving him CD's with goldfinger, reel big fish (more ska then punk.. but ska is good too), the pietasters.... laagwagon. And he just skips past it. I tried to tell him that it doesn't all sound the same... (some of it does.. but not all). To me punk has the energy too it.. and MrHiemey ( being the lethargic Lad that he is) Could use that energy positively!

Someone talk some sence into this boy!

( If you think this is non-sence then don't post.. I am bored )

I like Reel Big Fish. They had a cool song on the Baseketball soundtrack I think. Didn't they do "Sell Out"? Hate to say it but there are alot of simularities in the punk genra.. the difference is found in lyrics mostly. Other than that it all just seems to be banging on 3 chords. I listen to everything though. Play him some Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

My god, who cares if your boyfriend likes punk or not? Please tell me that as a punk rock listener you're not shallow enough to try and force your boyfriend into liking punk just because you do. What happened to the punk of ideal of I do what I want and I don't care what you think.

I understand wanting to share your music with him, but if you've tried and he's said no thanks, let it go. Shit, when my girlfriend and I started going out I listened to Einsturzende Neubauten (German Industrial noise shit). I knew there was no way in hell I'd ever convince her to like it. Considering our relationship is about so much more than what music we like it didn't really matter to me what music she liked... well unless it was country ; )

Anyway, don't try to change him. Focus on the areas of your relationship that you do have in common while keeping your own individual ideas. Share your love for art if he's into that and have punk music as your own individual taste. Remember, if your too much alike and you start listening to all the same music and dressing the same you'll look just as stupid as those couples who buy matching jogging outfits : )

We've been together for 4 yrs. I was just in a silly mood ;p..... sometimes people just want something to have strong opinions on. I thought I'd get some silly responses... not some serious "Oh my god" responses....

I more so posted this to get a rise out of MrHiemey (he thinks I don't pay much attention to him) so you can rest easy... I am in no way attempting to "change" him... I was actually "playing around" with him.

chill ;]

i skate a lot and listen to punk somewhat... although i dont consider the bands mentioned above to fit into my punk catagory, i guess ive been out of the loop too long :/
i consider punk; to be stuff like nausea, filth, assuck, fleas and lice, dropdead, resist, and all those emo"tional" bands like botch, converge ect ect

i only know a half a dozen people who skate and listen to punk music. most of the skaters i know listen to rap, KFDM(?), rage against the macaroni, and techno.

this aging punk i know once started his own offshoot of a popular subculture:
SkateEdge
skateXedge was sort of like hateXedge or those hardliner groups but instead of purity, the skateboard was its focus.
it grew in popularity for awhile, untill kids sporting skateXedge or skXe patches and t-shirts started getting arrested. the philosophy behind the movement: beat up people who dont skate.

Oooooppss.

Sorry for going off on you a little Ivey, I've just known a few too many people who would make a big deal about their boyfriend/girlfriend not liking the same music as them. Obviously if you've been together as long as you two have then you must have "something else in common"

Faithinchaos : when i hopped on this thread i kept saying to myself "dont start about dropdead, dont start about the DK!" but alas, you did it for me.

I really dont think bands like lagwagon and MXPX and whatever happy-happy-yoy-yoy shit is "punk" just like limp bizkit and korn arent "metal". Its simply uptempo pop with guitars and less talented vocalists. The people at MTV arenstupid, they see just as many frustrated 12-year-olds with no self esteem and too much money and they know what sells to those sad fucks : attitude and watered-down nonconformity. But those 12-year olds buy their stuff with mommys creditcard so it cant be too hard or she wont allow it. Enter poppunk and nu-metal.

And the worst part... with people growing up thinking Linkin Park is "metal" (or, god help me, "hardcore"), everything even remotely harder but just as commercial is deemed "real metal" or even underground. Every weekend my 15 (mentally 13) year old brother chills out here with his pals and then one of those little wannabe-alternative fuckwits in his coalchamber shirt will put on Slipknot and rant and rave about how hard and brutal and nonconformist they are. "Yah and they have songs about real stuff you know! (FUCK YOU!! COCKSUCKER!! etc...)"

And then i just smile. And think of when i was 13 and got my first Napalm Death tape. And wonder how kids got that fucking stupid in only 5 years.

am I the only one who doesn't care what a song is classified as? I listen to music for the song, not because it's labeled punk or metal no hardcore or whatever. If the damned backstreet boys came out with a song I liked, I'd listen to it. It's not about who does it or what they've done in the past to get them their current label, it's about the music. The sound, the thought that went into creating the song, be it random drug induced babbling or an important life learned lesson, it's the music that gets me.

I've got cds ranging everywhere from classical and jazz to Jewel and Sarah McLachlan to Metallica and NIN and The Union Underground to Paul VanDyk and BT. My MP3 collection is even more broad. Point is, to me at least, it's the music that matters, not what kind of music. Listen to the song, not the band or the classification.

-"it appears to be some sort of a congregation..care for some gopher?"
-"I can't wear a turtle neck. It's like being strangled by a really weak guy. Like, if you wear a turtle neck and a backpack, it's like a midget is on your back choking you."
-"As the profecies foretold, he becomes president, builds a rocket suit, and all this bad shit happens."

*Hand on Forehead*

Why? I just wanted to get David to call my house and say "Michelle... why did you post this on sijun.com?" Instead I get this whole discission on what music fits in what genre... which eventual turned into faust hitting spitfire with a soilborn..(Which I first read as stillborn)

(BTW: Faust... you remind me of JTHM... thats a good thing... at least for me it is)

I don't care which music is which.....

I listen to Oingo boingo, Ace of Base, NIN, Poison, MegaDeath, BT (fucking rocks), Paul Van Dyk, and House of Pain.. ok? I listen to a lot of shit.... but not country.

This came about becuase I heard a song called "Bumble bee tuna" Its kinda punk/ska.. and I wanted david (MrHiemey) To listen too it.. to make a long story short he liked it.. but doesn't like punk all that much.. ( But he owns a rancid CD which I KNOW he listens too.) He was laughing at the responses and figures he doesn't have to post to defend himself. Which he doesn't... i was just playing around...

Geez... Fucking artist's.
