I'm heading off home for xmas festivities tomorrow morning so I need some quick appraisals, just to check that there's nothing OMG-wrong before I send it off to everyone.

(Argh, why did I leave this to the 11th hour? I wanted to do a really kickass one this year..)

In case you're wondering;

. Face and posture are based on a photograph of a guy I know (hey Xeno!). Puffed him up big time to get the Santa shape.

. The santa "look" is largely, but loosely, based on the picture on Coca Cola bottles here at the moment.

. The position of the hand, and I guess the general style of the gun, are based on the Gunman Chronicles picture by Joachim and Micke. Also used my hand for reference.

Stir well, add personal touches; Done.

After some of the Santa pictures that have been posted here recently, I think I'm gonna seal off my chimney and sleep with the lights on this year ^_^

Nice. I don't think there are any modern Santa images that AREN'T based on those coke paintings. That guy basically invented our modern image of Santa, based off of the description in "Twas The Night Before Christmas".

Times up, here's the final version;

Still not happy with his right eye but I can't find a combination of brush strokes that doesn't make him look x-eye'd, so he'll just have to live with it.

--

Jez; I hope that the nasty-santa theme is purely the result of artists imagination rather than any serious comment on the sanity of forum artists.

Ben; True. And the illustration on this coke bottle is -particularly- excellent. A really nice piece of work, I'd love to see a scan of the original up at full size.

evil: good comment on the cuff, it was too small. And the gun? Well, times are hard and even Santa can be mugged if he's not careful. The Velioblast-2z solves that problem.

cool santa.. i love the texture in his beard, and the way the gun is painted- nice rendering of different materials. i do have a couple of nit-picking crits- the first being that his hand looks too red.. the second is something in his lips- it doesn't seem right for some reason. perhaps i'm simply expecting his mustache to cover it entirely.

Hey Rowan, nice image! =)

Here are some of the things I've noticed wrong with it...

Black eyebrows, very contrasting to the white hair and beard, AFAIK, Santa should have white eyebrows.

His cheek shapes are mismatched, based on the shape of his right and specular of his left. To make him more 'smiley' his cheeks should be pulled upwards a bit as his right cheek seems to be, so adjusting the highlight on his left cheek to be less wide and higher will enhance that.

Some perspective problem on the barrel of the gun.

Something about the value of his hand throws mw off, perhaps it should have more contrast or be lighter to enhance the readability of the depth between the hand and head.

Other than that, the rendering is very well done! I especially love the white fur on the hat and where his moustache almost meets the ear on his left, very cool!

Yup, asl Bilbo said, I also think his moustache should cover his top lip, and perhaps don't be afraid to make a totally fat bottom lip, indicating his largeness.

cheers!

bilbo:

You might be right on both counts there. I made the hand redish to match the face but that probably wasn't the right thing to do. And I did have the mouth covered by the mouth at one point but it didn't look right then either so I trimmed it back. The mouth was mainly 'made up', so that's part of the problem.

frost:

The eyebrows - I would have intuitively done them white too but on the coke bottle they are actually dark, and it looks cool. But you're right, it doesn't look so right on mine.

The cheeks - I wanted to make him smirking rather than give him a big cheesy santa grin, thats why one side is up and the other down.

The gun - it's difficult to sort out perspective because so few of the edges are actually parallel with it's axis. The muzzle flanges outward, the 3rd section down angles inward at the top, and the last section angles in towards the front. Actually, I think if anything is out of perspective it's probably the base of the handle. I should have twisted that a bit more to match the rest.

Fat bottom lip - thats a good idea! Too late now unfortunately.

Thanks for the comments, all good ones.

Row.
