Can anyone out there draw cars?
I'm trying to get the look of the super-shiny car for this futuristic racer here, and I think someone told me there are artists here who are/were professional car concept sketchers...???
Cheers, A. |

I think that looks very cool. You have a very comic'ish styles of work, I like that. Drawing cars, huhm, spooge can help you on that one . You must like moebius ?...I do.
In your profile it says web programmer....why don't you get an illustration job ? Seems like you handle it very well.

I really like that design. Reminds me of something Syd Mead might do, although it's not totally his style.
Very cool. It seems a little perspectively-incorrect though, but just a little in places.
The girl is well colored although the pose looks a little stiff. Not really my field to be offering fix suggestions though.
Row.

I really think that is a great concept. I agree that the pose of the figure is a little stiff, mostly due to her arms being locked the way they are. The perspective is off(on the car) in some places as well. Take a look at the centerline of the car and then take a look at where the bolt detail(?) is. Its a little off. Also the pinkish nose isn't quite going to the same vanishing point as everything else.
As far as making things look shiny, I think you have succeeded. I personally like the look you have achieved better than the car-concept-look. But if you want to do it the way of the latter, then check out a book called "How to Draw Cars Like a Pro" (Thom Taylor and Lisa Hallett). Also check out www.goodbrush.com. Spooge has a basic reflections guide that he whipped up for a class he taught at Art Center (I think). OK, hope that helps. I look forward to seeing more from you, A. |

Thanks guys;
Joachim - I worked as a programmer years ago (late eighties), and everyone used to tell me "Gee, you should be an artist!" when they saw my sketches. By chance, I landed a job at a games company doing art for Super Nintendo games. Eight years later (ie, this year) I went back to programming because I need the extra money to pay off my house. Its a pretty sad state of affairs, but I've never found the illustration thing to pay well.
By the way, I still remember seeing Moebius' art for the first time, it blew me away. I was about 10 years old. European comics in general are awesome. I saw a comic shop in Zurich a few years ago while on holiday, and was so absorbed when I went in to buy some books that I didn't realise I had parked illegally in front of the Swiss Police Headquarters! Ooops.
Get-up kid: I'll see if I can get this book. That's really valuable advice - and I guess kind of the whole point of the forum. Thanks.
On perspective: Maybe I should set up the perspective with a 3D package (lightwave?) first before launching into the drawing? Has anyone done this? I mean just a basic model, maybe even just a box for the car, and a grid for the ground..... |

Feng was mentioning in a different post that he uses 3d studio to setup a quick perspective set just so he can reference it.
It'd probably be really helpful to have the major perspective lines there for you and any of the 3d packages could do that easily, just depends on which one you're the most comfortable with.

Once again, nice job 'A'
that image rules! I think your going in the right direction with the piece, and the lighting looks alright. I think that car magazines might give you some insight on the perspective problems *the one or two that i see* that people are talking about...
along with that shiny feel your looking for
hope this helps out somewhat
