I think you should allow personal pictures (on the left beneath your nickname) it makes this board a bit more friendly , I mean , then we at least have some sort of uh .. face I mean , on other boards I use yuo can use it and it's cool to see what people always use as personal pics , and it's easier to remember someone by that little picture then by a name ... I mean ... oh ... well it just looks better |

No, please don't. That would slow my already lame connection too much down. That would ban me from this forum and I guess there are some more people out there who can't afford to download a topic with about 20 pics...
I know there are some more people out there who got less than 2k/sec.... |

He disabled it for a reason!!!
It can be very annoying and slow down non-cablers. It's already a pain waiting for a 220KB pic to load, let alone opening a post with 30 or more replies which also includes a 30KB signature for each and every reply... No thanks.. I'll pass, if he'd enable that, a lot of people would stop coming here I think. If you want to add 'a little personality' to your posts either develop some, or just keep it to a witty quote or something.

That's just plain bullshit , if you are a normal person and put a gif frm about 4kb , you won't even notice the diference , those imeages are limited to 16*16 pixel size ,so don't tel me that takes time to load , not even on ezboard it slows down |

True, one 4kb image doesn't take long, but what happens when 10 or 15 people reply to a topic, each with their own 4k image? Or when one person's server goes down, and you end up sitting there waiting to get their happy little face under their name when you could have already finished reading the post?

16x16 isn't much of a face.
60x60 or 100x100 isn't much either..

Icons and logos would distract peoples from the content too much. Besides i wouldnt want to see faustgfx's face every time i read some post :p
I got a better idea though! A separate page with all peoples list who sent email with theiir small icon like 60x60 or some like that..

I'm also stuck with a super-slow connection. 2-2.4k/s is all I have to work with. This usually manages to pull in threads with a single image posted in a decent ammount of time. But once people start posting multiple images it gets pretty hard for me to get all of them to load. I usually end up having to refresh the page several times, let my cache pull the ones that loaded successfully, and my connect can focus on the ones that didn't.. This all wastes a good deal of time tho, and adding personal pictures would compound the ammount of work and time it already takes for me to browse this forum.
I usually get to start reading peoples responses to images while I wait for the them to load, but the personal pics would also slow the initial display of the posts in a thread.
So uh, I vote no.

There isn't only the problem of having a small file size... those who are experienced in web design will know that the more file accesses you do the longer it takes... pinging the server, verifying the file's info, seeing if you have the good version already local in your cache, and then downloading it locally. The file may be 1 byte long, but you'll waste 2 seconds just verifying the file... now multiply that times 30-some-odd different people's posts in one thread, times the lousy ping responses from people's free web hosting sites like Geocities, etc, and you got something pretty annoying happening. I say we don't need it (plus it would require Dhabih to change quite a bit more than he needs in his webpage design to add such functionality with user preferences to show or not show these graphics.).
My 8 cents worth. |

How about adding a pic option in the personal profile? So you could have a look if interested? Just an idea... |

I say we hack the board so we can embed a 80x300 flash file with a full body portrait of ourselves in our favorite costume. The flash file would have to be at least 30 frames per second and would need lots of streamed techno music and our voices with lots of distortion. Now that would be a download. Try going onto one thread with 10 or more replies with that.

Jaymo's idea... i'm up for it, a small pic in the profile. It's what a profile is, isn't it?

Better yet, let's stick with the theme of the forum and have our pics be our self portraits.
In the profile section of course!

Let's face it, comedy is a dead art form. Now tragedy, ha ha ha, that's funny!

One of the reason why I like this board is because it doesnt have those stupid signature like other board. I prefer plain text, it looks for professional that way.
And it saves loading times ALOT for modem user like me ofcourse. |

Instead of the same old boring faces, we should have pictures of our ASSES! |

That's a bit rough, innit?
I'll be redesigning the forums soon to be inline with the new site look, so relax, Bill.

It is a hit for modem users, but....
Even if i wanted to put, i can't, this UBB doesnt support that. I can hack the board to make it have profile pics, but that will screw up other things possibly. So sorry man, unless it gets supported in a future version, no profile pics :\

I try to refrain from even putting my text signature. It's just clutter. If you want to know who I am, you can look to the left. If you want to know more, you can click the profile link. |
