Wow, those portraits are great you have good lighting and the painting looks so real.. its like you painted them in oils or something.. I am trying to learn how to paint digitally, but its not going to good.. let me show you..

Any tips on how i can improve it?
i used only paintbrush.. this is all done from scracth in PS.. with a mouse..
Janne, can you go a lil into how you did those gorgeous paintings? did you use only 1 layer? what brushes did you use?

Looks pretty good. The colors are a bit off. In the first the reds are too pink and the greens are too bright, and in the second there is too much green/yellow. The ear is falling off his head in the second, and the face is twisting left as it goes down(his left). Nice job, keep pluggin away!

I really like your choice of colors... but somethign looks a bit wrong with your perspective.. on the far side of the face. I'm not sure what it is though. Anyway, great work! Like the noses and lips. |

Janne, you're an awesome artist, how did you become this good? did you learn it all by your self or did you learn it at college? |

Really nice paintings. I have been trying to achieve the same effect with some of mine. I'm guessing you painted this in Painter? If so, what tools did you use to give it that oil paint look. Did you use a grainy water variant or a certain type of brush?
Appreciate it. Thanks

nice studies....my first impression is that you are getting good moody colors...I do think that your darkest darks could use a bit more color in them so they dont look muddy. I also appreciate the little notes of color that you are putting in places....Id keep pushing that...keep refining them....or do another and push all the way to a finish. do more do more do more...you are on the right track. Try pulling lighter shapes (sligtly lighter) around and behind the heads too...you will get stronger forms if you use counter change (relative light against dark for space and composition).
keep up the good work...keep pushing them farther...maybe do some full figure stuff.

thanks for the feedback!
bubonic&zeio: these are painted in painter with custom brushes i have made. nothing special in those, though. just a couple of really fast all-around brushes. they have to be fast enough to suit painting in 2000*2000 res in painter(which can get quite slow with normal brushes). some bleeding in one or two of the brushes but nothing more of painter's more advanced features. and no more than one layer in these. i begin painting from a canvas filled with some middle color, first blocking the big shapes and moving gradually towards the smaller details.
Jason Manley: some awfully good points there! thanks a lot from the encouragement. |

Excellent stuff Janne. You put a lot of character into those portraits. But I do agree that the shadows are a little dead. Its a very hard thing to do, but shadows have form too, and not just flat dark colors....Anyways, very nice!
