hello all. i haven't been doing much drawing and painting recently, and stopped checking the forum for a few months as well. now that i'm back, i see how so many people have improved by leaps and bounds, so i've decided to commit to drawing & painting again.
here's an exercise i did last night. it's my 2nd real 'digital painting' since i'm mostly a line-art kind of guy.
sketch
painting
the point of this was to get my brain working in the right way again, since it's pretty rusty. i drew the hand with no reference, trying to figure out the forms and contours from memory and imagination. (thats why i drew a hand as my first exercise - pretty easy) then i checked the sketch against my real hand to make sure it wasn't too too bad, and painted it. (again working from memory) hopefully this will get me ready to work with more imaginative subjects, where a lot of the picture has to be guesswork.

Great looking hand! I really like the lines.
One thing, I can't really tell whether its male or female. The wrist is kinda skinny, so that suggests female, but the fingers are a bit beefy and suggest male.
Well, I dunno, just something I noticed. It still looks pretty darn good though

Hey I like it! the ring on the finger is looking a little bright...everything around it is shaded and I think it would look a bit better if the ring wasnt as bright. Also, might try making your nails pinker, and if you really got time, some texturing of the hand would be great! Might also try to define edges a bit better..especially those areas where the fingers overlap each other. |

Welcome back. You have been gone for awhile.
By the way, new folks.. hennifer is a guy, so think twice before you start hitting on him. hehe
Oh yeah.. nice hand by the way. I like the sketch better than the painting though. I think you may need some stronger shadows in the painting. |

hey guys, thanks for the replies.
periadam - i've created a hermaphroditic hand. ...i see what you mean, altho judging from my own wrist it can't get too much thicker. (and i'm a pretty well-built guy) i'm going to try making the angles a bit sharper to show off the structure of the wrist more. i started slacking off towards the bottom of the picture.
toylet - thanks, i'll take your suggestions into account esp about the nails. a bunch of people suggested i change the color of those.
chapel - i was actually considering changing my nickname on here. i'll try some bolder shadows.
also, does anyone have any comments on the color palette i used? i've noticed that micke & others posting portraits have used a lot of color variation and i'm not quite sure how to blend that in. any tips?
