this is a 20 minute quickie.
here's a sketch ( what can i say, i like cloth! )
and this is.. uhm.. i don't know what this is.
pleeeeeeeeeease. suggestions, tips, smackdowns on how to color would be greatly appreciated. any good books? ):

Wow, you are already showing control over your tablet! My tablet was mailed to me untamed and I would make these annoying wiggly lines! Very good job bitz. I like the last sketch... stick around and I am sure you'll pick up some tips...
There are lots of coloring techniques, There's smudging, airbrushing, or spooging. |

i dont think i would be able to give fruitful comments on the digital painting, but as for the drawings i can say some stuff.
first one:
well, you say you like cloth, and damn it shows. i just recently got the hang of drawing draperies and cloth and that... after many years of figuring it out. it has a great sence of mass to it and it looks interesting as well. One of my biggest things in drawing though is variance in line. The lines in this are fairly consistant and i feel that makes it lack interest (despite thewonderful cloth). also when you vary your line (by this i mean the pressure which you draw with, going from very thick massive lines to faint hairs gradually) you can create an even larger sence of depth and character. It also suggests weight and makes certain areas feel heavier than others. Practice drawing just straight lines, going from full on pressure to barely touching the page. then reverse this and go from light to dark. then go light-dark-light and vice versa. then after you get the feel of it, it will be natural yto you. It will show to when yuo get the hang of it. here are 3 examples of what im talking about in my drawings (not to pimp anything here... these are just examples)
torso
white on black
soo hot
look at the line quality for what im talkin about.
the second one:
nice face! the only thing that really bothers me about the face is the lips. they seem just pasted on so to speak. maybe the upper lip should be shaded a bit and right under the lower lip there should be a shadow, right imbetween the chin and the lower lip. Nice definition in the face though. the armor is unique, as is the arm. nice touch. again here, try the variance in line technique. i dont want to make you try it, its just a suggestion that may help it out. It doesnt really look right in all drawings though, so play with it and see what you can get.
i hope this was of some help man

Thanks for the comments guys
Gotcha Trance. I actually have used a tablet before for a CAD class, so I can't claim to have beginners skill with it, although using it to color is a bit different than using it to draw a house with, I'm somewhat used to the feel of the whole procedure.
Moose, thanks for the tips on the line weight and I'll try and practice them and include them on some more studies. I've never actually had any formal art training of any kind, so these boards are sort of like my teacher and tips like yours help alot
As for comments on the actual drawings, I'll see what I can do to fix the lips, I should probably clean up both of those sketches. I know the eyes on the knight guy are sorta screwy and uh, I just noticed I left out one eyebrow. Oops.
Again, thanks for the comments and I'll post an update to these later ( at work right now ).

i think they eyes are fine, they could use some more definition, but not a total makeover. the eyes and eyebrows make him an interesting character, but if its not right to you change it until you are happy (but dont overwork it... it could end up getting muddy).
good luck man, i cant wait to see what you pump out now!

Very nice pics.. In the first one i like the color of the head armor, nice clean gray, and you made a nice transition to each gray..
For the pic with the cloth around the pole.. It looks really nice, it shows you have a good understanding of drapery, and nice shading..
For the guy with the missing arm and who is looking down, looks nice, good sense of anatomy although the bicep and the forearm don't look too good.. But you did a real nice job on the suit and abs.. |
