Love the definition of form on the orange side of the face! Also the blue stripes do a good job implying the 3d look.
..the white highlights make it a really slimy-looking. icky.
My only crit would be the feathers going behind his head, assuming the curve they form is symmetrical, none of the orange-colored feathers should be visible. Or they'd be at a very low angle disappearing behind the head.
But then he's old and maybe doesn't care how he looks.
For background, maybe something abstract, a shadow, something very simple. And now that I look again, the elbow might be too high on the arm, leaving little room for the biceps. Not sure about this, but there's something funny going on.
Not sure if any of this was worth reading but the pic is nice and copied on my forum directory :)

Hmmm. Excellent job CWB, but I must say, I liked the previous dino-chief much better. Smaller eyes, pointy brows, more prominent snout... looked more dangerous and animalistic, more dinosaurian. This guy seems sad and non-threatening. That may be what you're going for though, so enough about that. Anyway, I like this pic a lot, but the earlier version of the character just grabbed me more. Whatever you choose to do, I'm definitely interested in where this will go from here...

Here's an update to that last post about the dino-chieftain character. Here's the old post:

This was supposed to be a color sketch, but I got a little carried away on the head. It's based on the "Dinosauroid" model by Dale Russell and R. Seguin. I wanted it to look old and regal...kind of in between Native American and Egyptian except its feathered head dress is real. I also plan to give it some sort of clothing or ceremonial adornments. It's spear will be covered in little runes and symbols. I haven't decided on a background yet, right now I just have a gradient. Any suggestions, critiques?
The entry form for Spectrum 8 came in the mail, so I'll enter this if it turns out well.

Thanks for the replies, they're very helpful!
Gecko - Your right about the elbow, that forearm is wayyy too long. I think I'll keep the background pretty simple, like a rock wall of a cave or something.
Sacrelicious (Heh, love that name)- I'm really looking for something in between the two. I really like that rough, horny look of the skin, but I don't want it to be animalistic or dragonish(scrabble anyone?).
Thanks again for your feedback, it's a big help! Keep them coming!

ah crap, I can't see this one either!!!
is this the same one you sent in that email??
Or did you add more to it?
I liked the idea of the older/wise looking chief. It's not so stereotypical and it has more mystery behind it. I can see this guy leaning over a smoldering fire chanting some kinda incantation with the smoke forming strange shapes in the air...hmmm...give ya any ideas for a scene..
if this isn't the same picture..you know which one I'm talking about... |

Same head as I sent ya, but now it has a body, and a staff with symbols on it.
Hmmmm, that sounds interesting. I'll give it a sketch and see. |

Ooh! I like this one! Good work man! You got the shiny look down quite well, in my opinion, for the texture of the skin...I like your use of blues and greens...Very nice.
