Hey, I need some critisizm.
Stuff that I do know I need to work on:
-Proportions
-Skin
-Hair

I know all you 2D artists see this pic and think that that looks crappy. But I made this face by creating a box and moving the vertexes, then smoothing the entire thing. Very hard to do (maybe even a bad way to model faces).

Thanks for any critisizm!

He looks cross eyed. And his hair is REALLY thinning a lot.

That's a very goodly head you've made there! Only thing is, make the hair bushier. It is definately too thin in the brows and head.

The face looks good, but I think her eyes are too big. You could use too a better texture and it whould hel really A LOT. Regarding to the way of modelling it, try doing a face with patches, is way better (if you use MAX), on www.3dcafe.com they have a very good tutorial about it

Uh-huh, got it. But what about the texture? More red around the eyes? eh?

I knew that the eyes are too big (he looks hilarious when he's looking in any other dirrection) alrighty then, thanks for the critique.

I should have used a reference for the face...

Kaput
PS. I did model a head with patches a long time ago, looked awsome, for that time. I was really surprised at my results but the problem is you can't go back and fix anything at a later stage like you can with vertex modeling. Oh yeah, I made the ears vertex by vertex and then creating the faces between them

It's looking good so far but you should REALLY thicken that hair. Try using a lot more textures for the face, like diffuse, bump, specular etc. Also, you said you started with a box? try starting with a geosphere with 2 iterations. Works way way way better

I would go to www.spiraloid.com (no, not my site) and try to emulate the techniques presented there in order to make a better mesh. There are some great tips there that should help you out. He is the lead character artist on the Lord of The rings films...

By the way, over at Viewpoint, the artists always start with a cube to model a head. Smoth it once or amybe twice, then start moving vertices around. I dont use max though for modeling..too slow and clunky. Try Nendo..or if you have budget..Mirai. FAR superior.

the eyes look kinda cartoony. and crossed. I guess it could be that they are just too big.

Ok, here's an updated version...
The reason that the hair was so thin in the original is because I didn't want the render to take more than a few mins Thanks for the critique and the web sites, keep it commin'!

hehe..weeee.. like your updated picture.. oooo great stubble the man has. give him a mach 3. Anyway. it's hard to tell what the front of the hair is doing... kinda wierd, so might want to change the lighting on that or something.... also .for the eyebrows... hehe I think that the skin shouldn't show through.... . looks a bit odd...cant put my finger on it. oh well.

Arighty then, I re-did the eyes, and tweaked a hell-of-a-lot of things about the face, texture, and hair. And, oh yeah, I added some eyelashes

The eyes still look funny though, partly because of the lighting.
Here it is...

Also, what is the difference between modeling with maya and nendo and max?

Keep the critique comming!

Looks good, Kaput. Wacky hair, but still good. Only thing is he's a little cross-eyed.

I used the same technique as Kaput, and here is the product!!!
I followed a tutorial 4 hours straight.. reading every single word that guy wrote and trying to understand. Halfway through he started giving out awful lot of sh** that was impossible to understand! (you can easily notice that on his eyes eheh)

i dunno, his hair just really bugs me!! make him bald or something, or just a whole bunch of tiny stubs or something. other than the hair, i really think you've done a good job modeling this character! and yeah, keep making him older!

Whoa, it's wolverin!
Looking at the first and the last image, I can say you did a great job man, you have added a personality to the character!
I would recomend giving him short spiky hair though, or if you want to keep the hair he has now, make it shorter, define a shape and randomise it a bit.

Looks a lot better in last pic. I now that modeling in 3d is not the easiest thing to do, But I think that the eyes are to close together like he has down syndrom or somthing - please don't get pissed off.
I think it might be easier to get the right proportion by working with less dense mesh and metaforming it after.
I like the way the hair forms in single strands. I'm runnin lightwave 6 and I don't know if lightwave will do this or maybe I have to get a plugin or something.
Kaput what kind of software are you running?

Hey! thanks for the great replies!

[Shizo] : That is a great dino you have there! When I first glanced at him I knew that he was saying "YO!", very expressive. Puts my model to shame :P
I dunno, I like starting with a box and then cutting/extruding/moving vertexes

Shadowman: I completely agree with you! When you pointed that he looks like he has a down syndrom I realized just how right you are! Yup, need to move those eyes around a bit, BTW I use MAX with a hair plug in (free plug in)

Thanks to everyone for the great crit!

The hair: I'll work on that.
