Yet another character idea. This is one my friend made up. He's the bruiser. His armor/outfit isn't real detailed now but I plan on making it a tad more finished.
This is my first honest to goodness sit-down-for-more-than-five-minutes-and-draw-an-ink-picture-by-hand in many many months. I've been doing so much tablet stuff I've nearly forgotten how fun it is just to sit down in front of the tube with the sketchbook and just start drawing. Been so busy lately
I know it's a little off anatomy-wise. But it was fun.

This is a really nice clean image and I really like it. I like the 'blocky' style that you hint at and a very nice image all round.

Tiss nice
Like I said...I am a big fan of your work.
Paper an pencil, pen, crayons... its the only way to go. I have to do it on paper man.
Although it is nice to not have to scan and clean up your pic in photoshop.
Opinion Corner:: I would Try a different approach to his facial hair. I know there
Vikings, but he seems to have the same look as allot of the other Vikings. As for the scar
down the eye... well I would put it somewhere else. That is done way, way to much. As
for the ax...now Flexible I know you like it....So do I it kicks ass doesnt it.
Question Corner:: Are you excepting character ideas or designs? I am not as good as you
but if I have an Idea or something I would like to know if you are going to be open to it.
Cool stuff man..
Blitz.....Keeps rambling, and rambling and rambling.............. |

I like the nice clean look to it and the amount of detail is good especially the textures. As to the comment from Blitz about the scar. Even though it has been over done at times (even I do it quite a bit) I think it makes the character a little more interesting, it gives them a past and shows that they have fought before and are likely to again. |

very nice. Like how crisp and nicely inked in photoshop it is.... hehe . Anyway, I think the thumbs are at wierd angles... it should be slanting a bit the otherway. Just get a stick and try wrapping your hand around it like shown in the picture.. i don't think it works... i may be wrong. Anyway, great pic !!
[edit] as for the scar. keep it there. Add more on the arms if you so desire. It shows a certain attitude about the character... his battle axe being f'd up..his clothes in rags... his face scratched up.. makes me think of a homeless guy who just found an axe... hehe j/p. it shows that this character has been through a lot etc etc.. it wouldn't look too great if it was pristine.[/edit]

The hands seem a little small to me. The wrists are a little skinny for his arms also. Just my opinion though. Nice picture though. |

Very nice and crisp. Always love you pics. Some things come to mind though: Yes, I have to agree this is a much of a stereotype-viking. But then, what the hell... And I think the high amount of detail makes it rather difficult to visually distinguish certain features, especially, when even features of one object - like the arm - are so heavily defined; makes it look a little like a stone warrior.
Hm, I hope you get what i am rambling about...
Good work, rock on! |

WICKED: Thanks! I bet you could do something like this.
Matt: When I draw without the tablet I tend to get real blocky when I'm drawing with ballpoint pens for some reason.
Blitz: Thanks. I miss drawing by hand a little bit. I miss getting the ink and graphite all over the bottom of my drawing hand pinky My drawing callous is going away too, because I don't have to press too hard with the Wacom pen. As for the character design, it was made entirely by one of my friends, so you'll have to take up the scar thing with him I don't know if I'll be taking character designs from outside of my friend(s) but I'd love to see some of your ideas!
Axl: thanks! I agree about the scar, it is overdone but it fits the kind of warrior he is.
EvilToYLeT: You're right about the thumbs, the lower one is slightly skewed and you probably wouldn't even be able to see the top one. Orm has definitely seen some action. He's sent many to the halls of Valhalla and spit mead in the face of the terrors of hell
Rinaldo: Thanks! Photoshop is cool but ink is still where it's at.
Chapel: His wrists are a tad small. You're right.
[EDIT: Sorry was typing while you were posting :P]
Jaymo: Hehe thanks, and yeah I did get a bit carried away with his arm there

Looks nice. Crits: His head seems not to be in the center of the torso, if you compare the distances between head and the shoulders. The hands/fingers clasping the axe look too regular and rectangular in shape, i think. There's lot's of nice detail but it would help the picture if there were some more focused area with more detail and then less detail in the fringes. ..well I guess someone already pointed that out.
Anyway, I also like your inking and that blocky style on this one. Gotta sleep now.

i can aggree with Rhomb about there being issues with the hands. it looks like there should be more of an edge where his right wrist is. same thing with the other hand.
that's it, i think.. nice work!

Hi flex,
Well, this is probably my favorite of your's. It is really neat. There is something "vikingish" about your ink rendering style.
Keep em coming

Ya...Im telln you Flex... Paper its the way to go. I always have my sketch book on me. Its easier than caring around a computer and Wacom. hehe
About the scar, (and I know I should take this up with your friend..hehe) I know what it is portraying, him as a tough guy, it's just..I don't know I just saw some character designs for something and there was a guy that had that scar, and it got to me.
Im glad to see you got a good response on your line art. I have nothing but sketches of some characters right now and relay want to post them. I just don't have the time RIGHT NOW to color them but I have plans maybe Ill post the sketches. Hopefully I wont get yelled at, "hey you stupid kid don't post stupid stuff" you know what I mean.
Once again I am rambling so Ill see yas Flex

Very intense pic, as usual Elf, very nice
I think his hands are too blockish, there's a slight curvature in the knuckles, they don't line up straight like that, they have a slight arc.
Hope that helps, also, the reason why Blitz thinks the scar over the eye is overdone, is because I have a few pics with a scar over the same eye. hehe. Great minds think alike. hehe.
Anyway, great pic. keep it up.

Hey man.
Here is that coloring I did. It's just flat colors no shading. I wasn't even going to try shading with a mouse.hehe Takes so long just to color it. Well this is just a little color treatment for him. And notice I left the scar in
seeyas around Flex

Flexible Elf, that's greaaat!!
Do you mind if I use it for a character in a AD&D campaign? It would fit perfectly! I should try something similar, but I'm still learning to do realistic faces, so this is a bit far from what I can do actually.

Hey thanks again for the feedback fellas,
Rhomb, Nova: I kinda lost proportion a bit from drawing it so big basically all in inks. I just need to do more of an undersketch next time.
Pierre: Cool that's what I was going for! Thank ya
Skeezer: Yeah I was kinda goin for the carved from stone look. I took some liberties with the anatomy
Blitz: It looks way cooler in color. Maybe I'll try my hand at it if I can wrangle up some time. Cool stuff.
Ragnarok: Go for it! Glad you like it. Is your Character a barbarian?
Ceenda: Thanks man!

I had nothing better to do so i decided i would color with PSP 7. I didn't put much effort into it and the light sux ass but i think this looks better than just plain color. I did this with a mouse. I wasnt sure what taht thing around his neck is.

FE, it's a viking warrior and carries a battle axe, so your drawing is simply perfect.
When I get a tablet I will try to colour this sketch. |

Nice drawing, it could be a over done with cross hatch. but overall it looked good to color. Here is my quick color job, about 30 min.

Wow, first off, Great form, Flexible Elf! You can really see the strength he's throwing into that axe, as if about to strike a blow! Second, great coloring job guys! I'd have to say I like Wyatt Turner's coloring job the best...The red wraps around the wrist/forearm add a great contrast to the rest of the image.

Great pic as always flex elf. You got a cool and crazy style going. Personally I like your tablet work a lot more, but this stuff is still slick, if not generic.
Good stuff. |
