Hi,
Here is an image in progress. Any comments about the image would be appreciated

I think it's important to mention that I did not use any reference image and this is not a self-portrait

Thanks,
Pixelator

Nice man, what did u use to make this? I like it a lot. Great textures. Theres only one this that bothers me, that is that theres almost no shadow on the horns, add some and it will look perfect!

What's sad about ZBrush is that anything done in it looks all the same. I mean, it's nice and all, but it has very little room for variety. Photoshop has a ton of room for variety, so does 3DSMax, but not ZBrush which is supposed to have the best of both worlds.

Whoa. I have to admit that even though 99% of all the 3d stuff looks boring and same this kind of work stands out. Great skin, great reflections. Looks very alive ILM quality almost.

If i were to get very anal on this i'd say that the horns could use a different tint to contrast with the skin and those green stones embedded into his horns could have some kind of marks around them to indicate that they were screwed in or something and didn't just perfectly fill in every little ridge. Seems like green marble hanging from his ear should reflect some of his skin as well.

Awsome work.

I have to admit, I knew this was a Zbrush image when I saw it... but since the image is simple in design (it's just a head on a black background , it was pretty easy to figure it out... that and the incredible 3D texturing an lighting Zbrush does.

Now, despite the Zbrushery, the design of this is very Jim Henson-ish. I remember seeing a sophisticated talking CG Dolphin controlled by a very elaborate puppet glove (every joint of the finger on the glove corresponded to an analog control for the CG puppets emotion and movement). This design reminded me of that dolphin. I probably saw that thing on TV seven years ago, and nothing like that has really made an impact in the US...the CG puppetry that is.

[Crit]

1. See if you can apply a different bump-map to the lips - mish mosh of vertical lines and such.

2. The yellow forehead gem is a bit off-center... but, it does make it seem more natural.

3.The bottom outward corners of both eyes seem to melt into the surrounding skin. Then again, this is an alien so it could be 1 mm layer of mucous >:P

Man... cartoons in the future, with this type of detail for the models... they will be VERY scary! hehe!

Thank you for your kind (and quick) feedback I will apply these changes and re-post the final version soon.
Mean while here is the Garrrr! image (I have posted this image about 3 months ago, but knowing that many of you are new to this board, I am re-linking it)

Thanks,
Pixelator

P.S. These images were indeed created in ZBrush.

I think what makes ZBrush pics so identifiable is that there are almost no hard edges. It's all soft and mushy. But hey, it looks awesome anyway.

I think these are really cool, the character idea reminds me of starwars a little. Pixelator it would be really great to do the whole character design with this style, I'd love to see how that looks.

CapnPyro: Yes, Zbrush is a hybrid 2d/3d program, where the brushes not only have color, but have depth to it, so you can keep adding or removing layers... a bit like sculpting if you like. The lighting can be adjusted afterwards to get the effect you want, moving the light(s) around. If you know what a depth-buffer is, this is what Zbrush uses. It would be possible for the creators of zbrush to offer some slight rotations to a abrush image, but not my a large margin, and some blurring would occur because of the perspective up-/down-sampling (with filtering).

Pixelator: I like this one better... the lighting is delicate, and it has this Eni Oken look with the rounded shapes and colors.
