I Tried to achieve the same look I get by using pencil on paper, in Photoshop.
Usually my Photoshop pics start as line drawings which I "paint" on, but this time I kept the brush very small (2nd smallest regular brush) and crosshatched all the way as I would with pencil. Finally I blended the areas some to get a smoother look, and while I'm quite happy with the result, it ended up very different from what I expected. (it's somewhat influenced by Wacomonkey's animist pic).
Here's a recent pencil work for comparison:
(And yes, those are feathers the fish has for fins :)

Hrmmm.... really nice. I like the way it's turning out on your cross hatching One thing that's kinda bothering me is the perspective of the snout doesn't match that of the eye area. *shrug* could be just me though. great pic! |

Wow, when I loaded it up I thought it WAS a pencil drawing until I went back and read what you wrote. Very cool

If you reeeeeeeeeally want to get the pencil look, keep the brush size small even when filling in large areas. I like the look of the piece though, it almost looks like watercolor pencils in places. Just out of curiosity, is the portrait drawn over a scanned-in sketch? I can't tell for sure even from the fullsize. Anyway, I like both of these a lot. Good work! Later.

I REALLY like the style of your fish and the 2nd one is kinda cool - that semiblocky feeling. I agree that it does look a little bit watercolourish. The detail on the end of the snout looks interesting as I can see part of a weird looking rock face.

Evil: You're so right about the perspective error :]
Jezebel: hehe, thanks.
Solid: There are some more pics on my homepage, if you didn't check it out already. Not sure if any are made in the very same technique though.
Sacre: The animist is all Photoshop, no scanning. Also, what I meant to do was NOT to get the exact same look as with pencil, but to try the exact same technique I use with pencil. It really didn't come out the way it was supposed to :P. But, yeah, small brush would help with that.
Matt: Hey, I found the face on the snout as well :).

Thanks sedul :), I keep the brush opacity at 100% almost all the time, using pressure to gain different levels of color.
The brushes I use are the basic photoshop hard-edged round brushes.
