Hey fellas,
A few days ago I tried compositing/faking a b&w image for the first time.
This is the result so far:
I scanned a picture from a book (the original picture WAS of bad quality already) and merged it with a 3D model I made months ago. Just to be sure, the one in the front is the 3D model (of an aircraft that never flew).
The picture is supposed to be WW2 vintage.
Please gimme your critz and -even better- tips on how to make and improve black&white fakes like this.
Thanks in advance!

well that's pretty good already.
you have perhaps a little bit too much sharpening going on there.
the noise on the surface of the plane looks correct, but you edges are a bit too clean in my opinion. if you look at the farther plane, the edges are not that sharply defined.
nitpicking, yes, but that's what this stuff is about :)

Blur the edges on the first plane, or maybe the entire plane a little. Great image.

Yes, the plane in the foreground is still much sharper than the rest of the image, especially at the edges.
I also think that the foreground plane looks too small... it's much closer to the camera than the Me262 on the runway, and not far away from the figure with the flag. The closeness to the figure makes it look very small.

The original in the back is a Mee 262 "Schwalbe" and the 2nd looks like a prototype for the Heinkel Volksjger - it looks damn realistic. How did you manipulate the pic to look like an old b/w photo? |

thanks for the replies sofar. Keep 'm coming!!
You are right about the edges. Had a hard time blurring them, but failed at getting them look properly, so skipped it :-\
Good thing you recognized the 262, LordArioch
Yup, the plane is too small, but not that much. Compare the pilot's head size with that of the standing female (!) in front.
Solitaire, that's actually an Arado TEW 16/43-13 (yeah right). Check my homepage or www.luft46.com

Keep in mind the depth of field used in the orginal camera. If the Depth of Field is shallow and your merged object is outside of it's range of focus you need to keep an eye on the how blurry it needs to be.
If it were me, I would try to guess what all the original camera settings were on the camera before I even rendered the model. Get a good guess on: Film Speed, Depth of Field, and point of focus as a start and that should give you most of your answers before you start.

Cool picture, I think the shadows are a little too dark and a little edge smoothing would help aswell.. maybe you could add some grain; for instance compare the wheels of the two planes. |
