Hey all, I'm new to the forum. I've been at the forum for a long time, but I never felt good enough to register. But I thought, what the hell. I done have much artwork to post yet, most of my stuff is sketches on the back of homework.
I am probably at the novice/intermediate stage in my art. But they say practive makes perfect.
I also like to color in Photoshop as a hobby, I guess its one of my dreams to be a comic book colorist. Mad props to Liquid! a huge inspiration.
Here is a pic I colored for practice, original line art from Feng Zhu, http://www.artbyfeng.com/ , a great artist, one of my favorite. Anyways I did it as practice.

The original is here, http://home.dencity.com/digitaljohn/girl_01_original.jpg , or at Feng's site.
I don't really like how the background turned out on the image, and my light sources are off, still learning.

novice? novice ?!?
i think you've moved beyond that stage. you have amazed me. i'd love to know how you did it. the use of textures to enhance the basic colouring of the girl came out *very* professional.
if at any time you want to colour any of my artwork, i'd be personally honoured.
keep up the excellent work, and i trust you will indeed become whatever you want.

Thanks! I didn't think I was that good. I didn't use any textures to color this, all paint brush and dodge/burn.
*correction: I did use a set of Quake 3 Arena textures for the background, which I modified a bit.
jcterminal, if you send a nice clean line art I'll see what I can do about coloring.

hmm, imo the background doesn't fit to the babe - it's partially to clean and some parts seemed to be cloned.
How did'ya do the plating and that stuff? |

Thanks again, about the background: I wanna change it if anyone has an idea, I have no clue what would fit.
And about the plating I colored one section at a time, first laying down the base gray/brown then I used the burn tool to get the basic shadow down. Next I used the dodge tool to highlight, then I went back and speckled with both, smoothed and blurred with the smudge tool, and then dodge some more for the shine.
I'm gonna write a tutorial on my site, but I am too busy right now.

The texturing looks neat, but it doesn't really add any form. There isn't any depth in the gun and hand area. The whole figure looks a little flat. Seems a little too bright in most of the focal areas also. I'd stay away from using dodge and burn. That's just my opinion though. |

One observation: On the end of the gun you have the pilot light (little flame) which is giving of an yellow/orange glow. However, the gun is light in red.
It strikes me that you might want to change the glow on the gun. |

Feng, or Vortx, I'd like to hear what you think, you too Liquid!. If you guys get a chance. I know you get pretty busy and I'm glad to even be exposed to your work. Liquid! if you have any tips it would be much appreciated, I know you color as a living so I don't want bother you, I wouldn't want any extra work either.

Chapel you said it looks kinda flat, what can I do to add more depth and feeling to the picture? I know the background has to go, if anyone has any ideas. But I still am lost on how to add form. Any help would be great.

try using more defined shapes for shadows, they dont all have to blend
also, i think you got some good depth on the back leg. but the rest of the figure is pretty devoid of shadows. it almost seems to be just differing layers of highlight.

(it seems everybody has a go at coloring feng's pics his lines are just so good. he never did crit mine though :P ) |
