this might sound kind of stupid, but i was reading this tutorial for photo shop, and it say draw a rectangle with rounded edges. Im new to photoshop, cause i normally would use corel. Corel has a shapes tool that i would do this with. I search photoshop but didnt find one. Is there one in ps or is there some way of making the shapes?

Wicked, I don't think so. I might be wrong though. It wasnt possible in version 5.5, I havent messed with 6 much.
The way I do it is -
1) In the channels tab create a new channel and draw your rectangle selection there, fill it with white.
After you did make sure nothing is selected.
[Ctr+D]
2) Use gaussian blur to blur it. The stronger the blur the rounder it will become later.
3) After you are done with blurring go to
Image/adjust/levels
And bring the arrows close together. You can zoom in on the edge to see how rough the edges are.
4) Once you applied the levels to it, go back to layers tab.
Make a new layer, and then go to
Select/load selection
Choose the channel you just created in the second drop down list, its probably going to be named Alpha1
And there you can use it however you want.
Hope any of this makes sense. It works with any shape. And you can also use contrast instead of levels, but its not as accurate.

Hey wicked, not stupid at all. I used corel for awhile myself to create rounded rec and polygons. You can also make a rectangular selection and then go to select, modify, smooth, the higher the number the rounder the edges of the rectangle. Hope this helps. The above explanation works very well too. |

Hi..
i think i've got a more simple solution.
choose the rectangular marquee tool (or just press M), make the selection. click down the menu called Select between to Layer and Filter, choose modify and then smooth and enter the amount of pixels (i think) you want it to be 'smoothed'. just experiment a bit and you'll get it.
then click on the edit menu next to file and choose Stroke.. then type in the thickness of the line you wish to create surrounding your selection.. easy.. ![](http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/smile.gif) |

Here's what I do. I make my rectangular selection, save it as an alpha channel and then I run the noise filter called "median" on the alpha channel. This produces a nicely rounded rectangle without getting it all blurry. Of course you can smooth it with some blurring if that is what you need.
Best,

Well I'm always way late on any replies but I thought I'd offer my two cents. My procedure follows:
I use the pen tool with guides. I make a selection on the outside guide on the left and then on the top and drag the pen selection to the outside guide. (On the left)
I do this
All the way around...
When I have made the entire process I click on the paths tab and Ctrl + CLick on the little window that shows my selection and voila I have a marching ant rounded rectangle.
You can do this for any size curve just increase or reduce your guides as needed...
Later I hope it helps!
