I've heard about "cuts" and have seen a tutorial somewhere on the web about them, but what are they? What do they represent? Are they to mimick markers or more like using masks in airbrush work? Also, why use cuts when you can use a hard edge small brush? What is the advantage of them? Can someone take the time to let me in on this or point toward a good online tutorial explaining cuts please? Thanks..

"Cuts" are like masking if you airbrush. The main advantages for it are for comic book colors. You can run gradients and such on your cuts without disturbing the shade next to it. Here is a good tutorial on the use: http://www.figma.com/drawing/howto/eloven/el_color_01.htm
I personally never use the lasso tool though.

Thanks Chapel, very quick response. I'll take a look at the link. I thought that was the idea of them, just wanted to be sure. So it's more a style than anything right? |

Pretty much. I use to think they were a limitation in the color palette that comics use, but now I just think it is a quick way to add form. |

Fragenstein: You get a smoother selection, and can make the cut more precise.
