frostie :

Damn.. i just smashed my atari 2k6 and yes..
mb's vectrex brings back some nostalgia

As for the wintel vs. mac discussion, both
platforms have their pros and cons.
Just be sure to buy a decent machine, and
practise hard.. cuz talent is way more
important then any processor hehe..

I'm a lucky pc AND mac owner, and i only
notice NON art related differences.. like
small usuabillity flaws, hardware support
etc.

I hope you make the 'right' choice, that
suits your workflow and ambition. good luck!

In all honesty (and this is coming from a mac "zealot") it's neither... it's the person that uses it. Today's computers are pretty much even and it's all about what you need for performance and what you can afford.

P.S. Macs do 3-D very well indeed and have plenty of software.

Hehe... the neverending debate!

I'll have to second that!

I have a spanking new DUAL G4 with 512MB RAM at work.
And I must admit that Photoshop runs nothing short of BREATHTAKINGLY!
But Painter runs NOTABLY better on my private DUAL PIII 500MHz, 256MB RAM setup.
A lot of people on this board also seem to complain about Painter's speed, but I can paint with fairly big brushes quite smoothly. But it performs pathetically on my work Mac.

I think PC has an advantage and it's that if you want something "less" professional like games or funny stuff there is very little.
Oh, and are there regular updates on software on hardware? Just wondering

A few years ago I think this topic was worth debate. Now I think it akin to "What kind of paper should I draw on?". At the end of the day that choice alone's not going to put the touch of God into your works. (TOO BAD!!! Eh?) In terms of 2D the hardware has gotten to the point where even a pretty fair new system (either MAC or PC) does a pretty nice job. If I wanted to spend my time worrying I'd do it about 3 things...

1. Input device - ie WACOM(!)
2. What kind of monitor do I need?
3. Software, software, software.

This is a survey of which of the two computers I should keep... (I have to sell one to my uncle) I have the IBM Netvista, a old 200 Mhz dell, and the G4 cube... my uncle said he don't want the dell so I have to pick one... and I'll have to live with the other for drawing... So keep the replies coming pls...

As far as art, there's really not much difference as long as they're both fast machines. But it's the other software that I think makes PC superior. MACs just don't have nearly as much software. Games especially. If this is an all-purpose system, for use with games, art, and other things, I'd say PC. But if it's devoted solely to art and won't ever be used for anything else, then either one would work.

Of the computers you've described, the G4 Cube is the superior machine. A Dell 200mhz? That's not going to do much good graphics wise.

On the other hand, you can sell the Cube for a lot more money and get a cheaper, faster PC.

I see your dilemma. I would opt for selling the Mac and getting a PC.

damn , did you say a dell 200 Mhz ??

Keep your handsome G4 man ; you cannot do much today with a 200 Mhz Pc ; your g4 owns more than 4 dells like that

Btw, i have a duron based Pc, and i m very happy with it (mainly coz i can tinker about it and obtain the best it can do , thing it s hard to do with macs..)

Mac is too expensive and PC improved and are going to overtake Macs.
Instead of buying a Mac, I could buy two PCs with better performance with the same amount of money.
I have no problems with my programmes on my little WinMe crate.
Everything's going fine.
But I think OS X looks quite cool

Okay - to answer your which to sell, which to keep question:

Sell the cube, buy a nice dual processor "standard" g4 (cheaper than the single CPU cube - go figure) and net it up to the Dell (which you can upgrade with the change between cube and dual)

Use the Dell as a server box, have fun with the g4!

Or sell em both and get a g4 with a Cinema Display... mmmmm. Nice

whistler?

doesn't matter.. though there have been a few reported problems with overheating Cubes, i dunno what happened with that.. both platforms are great though PCs have much more software.. traditionally macs are thought of as faster for 3d, and im pretty sure new revisions of Adobe prodcts are released on Mac first.. But i havent noticed any diff between my PC and home and the G4 at work.

Maybe It's just me, but I my Mac is FAR more stable than any PC I've used. I used to work on PC, but converted to Mac because the company I worked for bought Macs. I also find the operative system easier to use, much better than Windows. I really look forward to OSX, I can't wait!
I love my 400Mhz Powerbook. I hook it up with an external monitor. But I'm also building a PC, because 3D Studio Max is PC only... But I look forward to getting a PC, really! It's a lot of cool stuff avaible on'em!!

Can someone tell me why PC's have that extra window for the program? It's a pain when I want to drag and drop between programs..

here's an example of generalization:
All people who like MACs are just... EWWWWW!
