Hi all,

I like to get critics on this portrait.
I drew it by eyes. No paint over. About 15 hours. Do you thinks that the tonals value are too light?
I used a limited range of value for the light area like 0 to 4 on a 10 chart.

It s the first time I drew this way on a Black and white picture.

The original picture reference

I think you have misinterpreted the structure of her ear from the photograph, which raises obvious questions about your approach.

Instead of copying the image pixel for pixel, THINK about what it is you're doing. Does that ear make any sense? No. A misplaced hair on over the top of her ear gives the impression that the top has joined her head, but it is simply a hair.

Study the structure of the head. Study anatomy, and look beyond the photograph as a flat collection of pixels. Are you an artist or a photocopier?

Was that too harsh?

vracky, i agree with most of the other commens . . . though some _were_ harsh. I think that big email makes it look like one of those calvin klein (is it?) ads with a skinny model in an alluring pose . . . asking for you, and leaving a nice big obvious email address, as to give all the magazine readers the impression that she will respond to your email and make all your wishes come true

Hmmmmmm.....

Very nice pic. I don't think it looks like her though. It seems you are drawing someone else when you draw your girls. She has many similarities to your drawing of Natalie Portman. Don't get me wrong, your painting is beautiful, but you've got some work to do on liknesses.

NOW for some constructive criticism.

The ear, but everyone's talked about that.

I would pay closer attention to the left eye. OUR left. Especially the corners. I think they could use some more work. Also the distance between the eyes could be a little greater.

Her nose in the picture doesn't ski jump as much as your painting does.

If you look at her nostril, the shadow hooks more at the end.

Look again at the bulb of her nose. The one in the picture is not as sharp, it's more spherical.

Her chin in the picture is a little larger, I mean the distance from the bottom lip to the bottom of the chin.

The outline of her face around the eye. There is only one curve there, starting from about the center of the eye to the eyebrow, not two. Also the outline of her cheek is a little hard, I don't think it sticks out quite that much.

The area at the corner of her mouth could use a little more shadow, that might take care of the problem with them looking pasted on.

Now, just so you know. These details I have just mentioned are subtle, and relatively minor, however the subtlties are what makes a person recognizable.

You have a great start, and you have shown tremendous skill so far, keep it up and ignore those people who comment on copying. they don't know what they're talking about.

Anyway, beautiful pic and I hope to see what you do with it.

Thats looking quite excellent my friend. I knew it was the same picture. The only thing is... give her a more normal looking ear. the real models ear is quite bizzare and you could take a small artistic liberty and make it look a bit more normal. There are a couple lighting issues too. your rendering makes the skin a bit to shiny try to soften the shininess a bit. Awsome work tho.

like the pic, looks just like her. it would look better if you took the e-mail and sized it down a bit then stuck it in the bottom right.

looks okay.. except that this woman (in the original photo too) has the ugliest ears I have ever seen.. *brrr*

the BIG email thing there is really unnecessary.. if someone would wnat to steal your picture he could just edit that email-stuff away.

mozeman is right about the anatomy, but of course anatomy study takes a long time - copying a picture can be a learning experience too (values, colors, tools..) and won't bring you to hell.. at least not the first time

Krondor/Binder/Stapler/Pencil/Ruler/Eraser/Any other school supplies...

You have no merit. You are to give no advice and/or criticsm about and/or towards any other artist(s) in these forums. You have zero credibility, and zero skill. You will refrain from speaking from this day forward. You will abide by my regulations, or I will send a rabid herd of llamas to your dwelling to anally abuse you.

Thank you.

[EDIT: Oh, the pic is looking pretty good man, but lacks a "softer" touch. Umm.. agh, too drunk to properly critique right now.. I apologize. Except to you Binder, you're a small and nutty terd.]

Ears messed up, hair needs to be softer, less individual strokes, and skin a little more contrasted.

Nex,
I know that anatomy study is a very hard and a long way. When I was a kid, I rather love drawing but I dont know why, I stopped for many years. Now, I had taken my pen again for about 4 years in my spare time. I try to draw anything to raise my level and to sharp my eyes.
.

At this address you can see some of my first drawing. http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Ridge/1873/dessins2d.htm

Practice pays off when you want to learn drawing!

Mozeman,
I m not a photocopier machine...At this time, I work like this to learn more. Like how the light react on a head, a chin and so on. For me, its like drawing a person in front of me. I rarely use Paint Over because its a bit cheating and you learn nothing from
, but my technic dont!!! I opened the original in photoshop and tryied to reproduce it in a new image. It help me a lot to see the image as many puzzle pieces.

Skeezer,

Have you ever try to draw a pic of semeone,,,Its very hard to capture his spirit.
But, I agree with you... She looks like semeone else!!! Miss. Portman pic too. But since I m not a professionnal portrait painter, I m very satisfied with my latest result.

I spend couple hours today making some update from your comments. I take his right eyes couple milimetrer to the left, redraw the noze edge, the ear (for sure!!!), the jaw line, the chin line, more black shading on the cheek
.

Thanks for your comments, Its what I m looking for when I post here!

I hope you (all) like it because... Its the better that I can do with my drawing skill at this time!

For the ear:
When drawing real people, the painter have to pay special attention to the eyes, nose,
and lips. These are the most important parts to make a figure drawing recognizable for the viewer. Except if you paint a character like Spok form Star trek, you ll have to draw his ears like they are. But on the Miss. Bart portrait, the ear are not so important. I could had drawn a strand of hair on it and most people who know this person should recognize it.

Here the final version.

Sorry for my poor anglish!
I put some big effort on this too.

The eyes are too big - too long towards the tear ducts, plus you've exaggerated the contrast in some places ; the iris and the lips - youve drawn what you think as lips, and not what you see. ie. there is no clear black line between the lip and skin area .. otherwise a good pic - shows a lot of potential ..
