Hey there Matt,
one thing I _always_ do is to put in a non-white background. This brings down the overall brightness of the illustration, and lets you save the white for true highlights. That's what'll give you a shiny look if you want it. Check this out:

It's pretty crap modification to your work, I hope it helps, I feel like an arrogant schmuck sometimes when I do this - art is art, how can you tell someone else what to draw?? I don't know.

Cheers, A.

*nod* A has a point.. well sort of... since the girl is already outline in black, it isnt really necessary to change the background color. But, usually if you do want to color the background, teh recommnded is purple... because it's the opposite of the pechish skin hue...but in this case you got purple for the clothes.so hehe no idea

OK my 5 minute poor arse attempt to try to highlight a few ideas. These are just suggestions but you can take en' or leave 'em. Try to increase the range of your colour (darker darks and brighter lights). Mainly on the characters right boot but consider more of a 'painting' style where you use colour, rather than fine art lines to give the feeling of depth and dimension. With the hair, try to make the streaks stand out a little. (hope it was ok to butcher your and A's attempts at this image)
