Hi all, sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've been fairly busy. Anyway, here is the goods. This is an original painting I did for the loading screen for a Capture The Flag game type in Unreal Tournament PlayStation2. It is also used as a poster and as one of the loading screens in UT Game of the Year Edition.

Fantastic Colors! I just about lost myself in the Blues of the clouds.

Then I remembered I was going to comment on the picture. The metal Breastplate sorta stands out. it doesn't seem to reflect what I'd feel is around it.

But man...pretty pretty colors.

All the UT players look so symetrical and clean. But that's not your fault. Nice pic.

What I like most about Shanes works is that no mater how 'fantasy' based it is, it always has strong links to realism.

By this I mean that when he gives the character armour, he adds the straps to hold the armour together etc. Everything looks like it could work in the real world.

Personally I think his back is too wide, makes it look he's got a belly or something

I'd go for the muscular type |)

anyways, greatwork as always

Very crisp! Has nice atmosphere and balance. I like it a lot. Only the fire looks a bit more like magic than real fire IMHO.

Nice work as usual Shane.. I swear I've seen that before somewhere. At first I thought I saw it on the cover of Game Developer Magazine, so I went through my issues, and, well, I was wrong, heh. I still cant figure out where I've seen this tho.. Maybe it was on a Poster. I forget. Dont ask me, I'm going nuts.

Cool pic!

My only crits are the arms, they seem like since they're stretched directly out from the body (and since the wrists are also straight out) that the biceps would be facing directly toward the camera, not angled upwards, which is making the arms look a little flat. And the fire way in the back looks a little too faded, I know it's behind some mist but I think the light would be a little more dispersed (reflecting off the mist) than darkened by it. But I might be wrong about that

The face and the clouds are real well done. I love the color choice. If only Unreal looked that good

A very good picture.Mixing styles... i like it.
The clouds are really fantastic and the armor too.How old are you?..

Well crits:

-I would change the fire becouse distract attention from the picture.

-The arms are so simetric... Id change them too.

-And thats all.Good job really.

Awesome picture. I especially like the flag and the clouds. I agree with the arms looking a little flat. Not sure what you can do about that though... Anyways, great work!

Hey Shane, nice work! But like Aquamire said, I know I've seen this before, as it was on a friend's desktop at work some weeks ago.

The crits go as mentioned above... but very nice work nonetheless! =)

Btw, did you get my mail some 2 weeks ago?

cheers,
frost.

Hmm.. It really is a kickass pic.
I think the breast plates are a little too small and the smoke from the gun should rise up instead of to the side.

(This pic definatly goes to my kickass collection)

Really cool work Shane, I remember seeing this at 3dp awhile ago..

a cuple of things that bothered me were the arms look too clumpy, dont have much shape to them. Also the pole doesnt really look like its in his hand, kinda looks like his hands in front of it. And the shading on his forehead, our left his right makes him look kinda klingonish..

sorry to bitch, I know im always bitching, but with you guys that are on this type of level, i figure i dont need to be very subtle. It must be better to hear stuff like this instead of me just kissing ya butt. hey hey

Wow, this piece is amazing! I really love the way it's been rendered. You are quite the draftsman and colorist. I only have a few issues with this piece and it just has to do with lighting. I'm not exactly sure where the yellow light in the upper right hand sky is coming from. It could be a sun hidden behind the clouds although it doesn't seem that way from the way it's been done. Maybe you can clarify that area a little bit. Also, the light from the flame in the left hand bg seems to be casting the most light in this picture. The light sourcing for the whole piece seems to be backlighting the character. If that is the case, then I think the front of the character should be darker. Notice the way the feet, foreground mountain plain just gets really dark. I feel that that same treatment to the rest of his body would make it more believable. Darkening the character would also alleviate the breastplate armor problem that others have pointed out as well. The mountain in the left bg seems to be a little too contrasty and brings it forward into the character plane. Maybe you could apply a little blur or wash over it to push it back into the bg just a little bit. Overall, this is a stunning piece! I think with a few tweaks, it'd be perfect. Excellent work!

Shane, that painting rules! Great job! How long did it take, if you don't mind me asking, and what reference? My guess is the in-game player model...? Very moody...good work!

Yea, I know the lighting isn't realistic, but I want the character more lit up than he really would be so it would stand out more.

Jaymo: yea, I'm not to great at doing fire, I might try something different for it.

aquamire: It is used in the UTPs2 strategy guide, maybe that is what you are thinking of. I did this like 2 1/2 months ago, but it got leaked by someone about 2 months ago, but I'm not sure by who. I was seeing it out on the net and was like how the hell did they get this already. I think the guy I sent it to for use on the UT soundtrack cover let it out somehow.

Visigoth: I'm not really sure how long it took, I worked on it off and on for a few days. I wasn't really trying to detail it out hardcore because it was made to go on the TV as a loading screen, and the resolution is really bad for TV(640x448). As for reference, none at all really, I did it right out of my head. It looks kind of like one of the in game models, but I took a lot of liberty with the design

Thanks for the crits everyone!

Right on! Yeah, TV resolution isn't the greatest, so they won't be able to really appreciate the art...lol Oh, a note about the smoke (to who had brought it up [Dominion]) -- The smoke I think is going to the side, because the wind is what's causing the flag to blow, as well as the smoke in the background...

Hi Shane!
Nice picture, I really like the atmosphere and background.
Anyways, I just got Unreal Tournament for PC a few days ago, it's such a great game and the art is very nice!
It's on par with Quake 3 in my opinion.
Good work!
