Alright, I'll reply.
I started drawing in elementary, and everyone said I had "talent". I had the natural gift, and nothing could take that away. Heck, thats what they taught me in VAPA also. Then, I picked up a wacom tablet. I've been working for the past year, and only now am I started to get anything close to good; you know why? Because I worked at it.
Unfortunately, I don't think its a level playing field. I think that there are things in birth that make some people start off with eye to hand coordination.
That having said, I have always thought that someone who works hard is much more likely to suceed then a person who is "talented". I think that hard work is the equilizer; any talent or anything that someone starts off with is worthless if they don't work at it, and someone who starts off without anything can overtake any of the best artists with enought work.
Anyway, my 2 cents

At one point in my life, I was considered a real natural in art. I would win stupid school contests or whatnot, but as the year went by, and I never once took a year of art.. not to mention my fascination with computers, where I rarely picked up a pencil, I can now say I suck ass. However, as my interests in digital art grows, and it is mind you, I feel that I am grasping those art concept once again. I'm learning sort-ta. hehe..
Just saying, it's not nice to discourage other people because they're on a way different level than you, mostly at the beginning. Would you discourage a 5 year old who makes a lot of scribbling? Or nurture him? Anyway, just my 2cents.

Hehe yes, let's all bury our hatchets or whatever.
The only thing that I really dissagreed with you about Isric was that you said if someone isn't gifted at something they won't ever realy enjoy it. I know this to be untrue because I have never been considered by anyone as overly talented at drawing/art. yet I know that it makes me happy to draw and that to not draw has the opposite effect. I have a very strong desire to draw/create (in some form or another) as a job. The simple reason being that I have found no other passtime that gets me up in the morning and keeps me up late, while enjoying every minute of it.
I would imagine that there are many people who have a head start for whatever reason but it only means a head start, nothing more.
Also on the Right/Left brain being debated, Betty Edwards said in the first book way back (and has continued to say) that despite if the theory is disproved the results of her teaching remain. they have worked before and bar some strange occurance continue to do so. The methods are founded on a scientific idea but do not rely on any scientific facts to be used. just because someone finds out that the brain works differently will not make the method work any differnt than it did the day before. It has always been and will remain a good way of visualising and explaining drawing in relation to the brain, be it in a scientificaly correct or abstract manner.
New scientific findings can only strengthen the techniques not detract from them.
My intention was never to create bad blood and I hope none exists.

One doesn't need to be gifted. He has to enjoy his work and work hard for his work. Those that want to be good at drawing have to enjoy drawing, else they won't have the stamina to draw, fail, draw some more, get better, fail again and so on. We make mistakes and hopefully we learn from them. But as long as we enjoy it, it doesn't matter. Learning from mistakes can be more fun than never making mistakes. It's lifes little flavor to humanity. |

When I started practicing Kung-Fu 7 months ago. I was unable to do anything. I couldn't remember anything or let my hands work with one another. When the right went up, the left went some other way. After a few months, and a lot of scolding from my teacher (he said once: is there something matter with your brain!) I finally begin catching on. My motor Skills have improved a lot (especially using both hands and so on). What this proves is that everyone can improve. The human body is one of the most complex and flexible mammal on the planet. We can do almost whatever we want to. As long as we get some enjoyment from it. |
