Spooge, I've seen that site before and i just can't believe how they can do stuff like that. Exact copies of others work and sometimes even whole pages. Unbelievable!
The Fabio Laguna guy seems to be topping the charts.
You picture looks incredible. The colours looks stunning as usuall. Sharp! The cross-hatching reminds me of the way Moebius paint with Gouache. I'm doing a cover for a Magazine right now so this was a great inspiration.

About that site, yeah somebody already posted it. I thing it's a great thing that in the comics scene people "homage" other's people work so often ( -NO!- ).

Had a quick look at http://www.genesiscomics.com/SOTW/ ... sickening -- about half of those are blatant replicas/traces.. from so called pros. Funny how the originals always end up looking better in the other cases... =)

(I bet Fred is laughing at this. =)

Spooge:

I have a question for you... you've mentioned before about hard shadows and such... and I think I've gotten the hang of it... but now, I think I'm over doing it. Sometimes when looking at things that I would normally expect to have a sharp shadow cast have a more diffused shadow... I know that the light's distance plays a role in the focus of the shadow edge, and that bounce light from small nearby planes can also cause shadow dispersion,... are there any tricks or thoughts on that you could help me with?

Should I go out and buy different type of lightbulbs and see how each have different effects?

Thanks.

I've gotta stick up for Kishiro on those Frank Miller "rips" . . . anyone who knows much about Yukito knows that he has a ton of respect for Frank, and those panels are obviously meant as homage.

That Laguna guy is a tool though

Cool stuff spooge. Love the shin guard and how you've managed a dank, dark atmosphere, but it's still quite rich in color.

Hmm.. I don't really like this one. The color scheme doesn't really appeal to me. Too much green. Also, It looks like you were playing around with a different style. Parts of the figure are painted real tight and some parts are your usual style. Should be one or the other IMHO. Shouldn't that vase be in more shadow also?

I like it. Very neat.

I agree with Grendel Khan. His left arm muscles look like they're getting soggy to me. But I don't know much at all about anatomy. Maybe you can give me a tip, spooge. How much anatomy should I learn and memorize? What's a good way of going about it?

nice one. the colors are pretty reminiscent of some of the "old masters." the lighting on his left forearm and his chest are particularly compelling. the position of his right foot looks to me as if its perched on his toe a bit, something about the continuation of the line from his shine perhaps... oh i don't know i'm not so good with perspective....

now to my standard request. would you mind - pretty, pretty please - saving the "steps" for one of these gladiator-knight-uther type paintings. i'd be very interested in seeing how you develop forms and perspective and how you maintain a loose brush struck while depicting light and form so well. oh well we can all dream : ).

Im new here (I started past weekend), and I have read a lot of times people talking about the "Spooge Demon".

Now I know why.

Astounding.

Hi Craig,
One thing that sparks my interest so much about your work Craig, is that you, even though you have a great deal of consistency in your work, every new image seems like a new experimentation, new style, new way of working, but still, with all of that, I would not have a hard time distinguish your pictures among others, no matter how much you changed your way of working, I think.

Someone mentioned that the colors in the above pic are reminicent of the old masters, I have to agree. Although Rembrandt comes to my mind when looking at this pic, I have to say that it reminds me more of Delacroix, But also one other, Theodore Gericault. Nevertheless, the pic is foremost "spooge". I like it very much. Think that the artifacts on his chest and the right leg are the most interesting. I would try to tweak the skin color a bit, maybe tone down the yellowish warmth of it a bit.

Your work reminds me of Velasques and Zorn quite a bit, both of them were very skillful in illuminating what they saw with a minimum of brush strokes. You never seem to paint more than you have to. Something that I try to be and need to be better at.

Great pic! I really like the metal shinguard and how you rendered it. The faint ornaments are extremely well done! You are the stuff.

The only thing that bothers me even remotely is his left arm. Its mainly the chest-shoulder, shoulder-bicep, and bicep-forearm connections. I would 'tuck' the pectorals under the deltoids ever so slighltly, and 'pinch' the bicep underneath the deltoid.

I'm by no means any kind of authority on anatomy, so if someone could school me please feel free to do so.

As usual, just my thoughts.

Pierre, that's Velazquez BTW. Just FYI.

Spooge, nice picture, again, and again. I am not the most clever guy around, visual wise, though. I have troubles finding the direction light comes from in this image: what thing is casting the shadow in its face&torso?

Weird dish BTW.

[edit message]

please, pleasy, please, excuse me. I guess I did not really look at the img. That is some sort of dungeon, then some kind of top exterior ligh uh? But, then, that casted shadow is quite dark, while I see no shadow casted by the overall body on the floor, at least that darkish...

Copyright infringement because he used the pose? I'm sorry, but I think the photographer would lose the case on that one. Too many differences. I can understand people saying its a rip when it is identical to something already drawn, but just using a pose? Come on. Fathom looks nothing like Daniela Pestova.

I overlayed the two images in photoshop, just to check if one was copied exactly. Well see for yourself: he obviously used it as a reference, there was no "swiping".

Besides, copyright applies to something one created or discovered, or at least as idea.... so the photographer "discovered a naked woman"?! Oh the pose you mean; well I think I could find at least a dozen other photos where women are standing in that same position. Nuff said.
